Always observe correct polarity when connecting devices. It is normal when charging that
accumulators with low capacity will warm up slightly.
Never cover the charger and the rechargeable battery in order to prevent heat build-up and
associated damages.
1. C onnect either the adapter with the alligator clamps or the barrel connector to the
charger's charging cable. The adapter with the alligator clamps can only be connected in
one direction and is thus protected against polarity reversal. The black clamp is always
the negative terminal and the red clamp is always the positive terminal. The barrel plug
connector can be plugged into the charging cable in both directions. The polarity of the
barrel plug connector (positive out or inside - see symbol on the barrel plug connector) is
shown where the two arrows ( ) are facing each other.
2. T hen connect the charger to a mains socket (100 - 240 V/AC). The control LED (charging
indicator) on the casing will go on.
3. C onnect the 12 V accumulator to the charging unit. Pay attention to the correct polarity.
The positive terminal of the plug-in charging unit to the positive terminal on the accumula-
tor, the negative terminal of the plug-in charging unit to the negative terminal on the ac-
cumulator. When the accumulator is polarized, not defective (high impedance/open) and
power supply is assured, the charging indicator turns off. The charging process starts.
Depending on the capacity of the connected battery and its condition (e.g. battery is old or
new; battery is dead, etc.) the charging time will differ in lengths. A large, fully discharged
accumulator with a capacity of 60 Ah, for example, may well take several days to charge.
4. W hen the charging end voltage has been reached, the charging indicator lights up again.
The charger will now supply power only sparsely to allow the battery to remain at its fully
charged level.
5. S top charging. Remove the accumulator from the charger and pull the charger out of the
mains outlet.
SAFETy DEVIcES
The plug-in charger is limited in the output voltage to the charging end voltage of a 12 V
lead-acid battery. The initial max. charging current of 1 A drops continuously when it reaches
the charging end voltage. When the accumulator is fully charged only a small residual current
keeps flowing (trickle charging). The 12 V lead-acid battery can thus not be overloaded.
In addition, the plug-in charger features a safety device against short-circuit. If the charging
current increases over a certain limit due to a short circuit, then, as is normal for any charging
process, the battery indicator turns off for a few seconds, and then turns on again. Check
the charging cable and the battery on short circuit in this case. Additionally, a reverse polarity
protection is integrated. If the plug-in charging unit is connected to a battery with reversed
polarity, the charging indicator will turn off. Check the polarity on the accumulator and con-
necting cable.
Note: If the plug-in charger identifies a short circuit or reverse polarity connection and the
error is corrected, the charger will function as described in the chapter "Connection, start-up,
charging".
DISPoSAL
a) Product
The product must not be disposed of in the household waste.
P lease dispose of the product, when it is no longer of use, according to the current
statutory requirements.
b) rechargeable battery/accumulator
A s the end user, you are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all spent rechargeable
batteries; disposing of them in the household waste is prohibited.
R echargeable batteries containing hazardous substances are labelled with the sym-
bol shown to indicate that disposal in household waste is forbidden. The symbols of
the critical heavy metals are: Cd=cadmium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead (the marking can
be seen on the rechargeable battery, e.g., underneath the refuse bin symbol shown
on the left).
You can return used rechargeable batteries free of charge, to any collection facility in your
local authority, to our stores or to any other store where rechargeable batteries are sold. In so
doing you will fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environ-
ment.
