START CHARGING
The charger can charge NiMH/NiCd batteries with 4-8 cells when supplied with a direct
current of 13.8 - 24 V/DC. Fully charged 12 V car batteries, however, very quickly have
only a voltage of 12.8 V anymore when connecting devices (e.g. a charger). This voltage
drops, depending on current tapped, to even lower values more or less quickly. For this
reason, this charger can charge only batteries with 4 to 6 cells via a 12-V-car battery.
In operation with mains voltage, charging of NiMH-/NiCd batteries with 4 to 8 cells is
possible.
• For charging, observe the warning notes of the rechargeable battery manufacturer regarding
maximum charging current and maximum permissible temperature of the rechargeable
battery.
• If the mains connection plug (1) is to be used to supply the charger with power, connect it to a
suitable mains socket.
In operation via the mains plug, a direct current of about 20 V is applied to the
cigarette lighter plug (3). To prevent short circuits, the two contacts of the cigarette
lighter plug must not come into contact with conductive materials. No other devices
must be connected to the cigarette lighter plug in mains operation (e.g. mains
adapter or car battery) either.
• As an alternative for the mains plug, connect the cigarette lighter plug (3) to a stabilised direct
current (12 – 24 V/DC) with the correct polarity. The front contact must be connected to the
plus pole, one of the lateral contacts to the minus pole of the voltage source. The stabilised
direct current supply (e.g. mains adapter) must have a current of at least 3.5 A available.
• The charger performs a self-test after connection to a power supply source. For a short
moment, the display (2) shows all segments. For mains and direct current operation, the LED
in the cigarette lighter plug lights up. If no battery has been connected yet, the display is
switched off again after a self-test.
• Select the desired charging current with the switch (7). Observe the maximum permissible
charging currents of the battery manufacturers.
• Connect the rechargeable battery to be charged to the charging output of the charger (10)
with a suitable charging cable in the correct polarity. The charger contains various charging
adapters for this. If the right adapter for your battery is not included, check www.conrad.com
for suitable accessories.
• Connection of the battery commences charging. This is indicated by the red LED „Fast" (5).
During charging, the display (2) shows „Voltage" (= current charging voltage in Volt). The
upper part of the display shows „Charge"; in the lower part, a battery icon appears as a
„running strip".
• Pushing the switch of the display (4) shows the following data: „Current" = current charging
current in mA, „Capacity" = the energy currently charged into the battery in mAh and „Time" =
current charging time in minutes. Another push will display „Voltage" again (= current charging
voltage in V).
• The charger will automatically end the charging process by a so-called delta peak
deactivation when the rechargeable battery is charged completely. If the battery is full, the
LED „Trickle" (6) lights up green and the LED „Fast" (5) goes out. The running strip of the
battery icon in the display is lit continually. Now disconnect the battery and disconnect the
charger from the operating voltage.
The charger has an integrated timer as safety device. If the battery is not recognised as
„fully charged" within the total charging time of approx. six hours, the charger deactivates
charging.
STARTING CHARGING
The display has a discharge function as well. The discharge current is independently of the
switch position for the charging current and is no more than approx. 120 mA. The defined
discharge serves to format rechargeable batteries. Formatting (repeated charging/discharging)
is required if the battery no longer has its full output because of frequent partial discharges
(memory effect, primarily in NiCd batteries). In a fully charged battery with a capacity of, e.g.,
1200 mAh, this process may take up to 10 hours (1200 mAh / 120 mA = 10 hours).
• If you want to discharge a battery, you may do so at once after charging has been completed.
For this, push the button „Charge/Discharge" (8). The LEDs „Fast" and „Trickle" flash
alternatingly and indicate discharging. The display shows „Discharge" and additionally the
battery voltage. Further indications, e.g. by pushing of the selection switch (4) is not possible.
• If you do not want to charge a battery completely but start discharging at once, the battery first
has to be recognised correctly by a charging process of 1 - 3 minutes. Only after this time
(depending on the battery's condition), pushing of the button „Charge/Discharge" (8) may start
discharging.
• The battery is discharged to the voltage of approx. 0.9 V per cell. For a 6-cell battery, this is
approx. 5.4 V. When the final discharge voltage is reached, the devices switches the
discharge process off automatically and starts charging at once.
Before using the discharge function, the desired charge current must be set with the
charging current selection switch (7). Observe the maximum permissible charging
currents of the battery manufacturers.
USB CONNECTION
The charger has a USB-connection (9) on the side. Any consumer can be operated at this
connection. It has a matching USB connection.
It can be used, e.g., to charge a MP3 player or mobile phone, etc.
The output voltage of the USB-connection is 5 V/DC, the maximum available current is 1 A.
Observe that concurrent charging of a connected battery and use of the USB connection
is only possible when the maximum charge current or USB current is not used.
FUSE REPLACEMENT
If your charger is not working in operation with the direct voltage input (3), an overload or short
circuit causes a defect to the fuse integrated into the cigarette lighter plug (11). In this case, the
LED in the plug is no longer lit.
Replace the fuse in the plug by an intact fuse of the same type. For this, the front cover of the
cigarette lighter (12) must be removed.
DISPOSAL
a) Product
Electronic devices are recyclable waste and must not be disposed of in the house-
hold waste!
Dispose of the product according to the applicable statutory provisions at the end of
its service life.
b) Batteries and Rechargeable Batteries
You as the end user are required by law (Battery Ordinance) to return all used batteries/
rechargeable batteries. Disposing of them in the household waste is prohibited!
Batteries/rechargeable batteries that contain any hazardous substances are labelled
with the adjacent icon to indicate that disposal in domestic waste is forbidden. The
descriptions for the respective heavy metal are: Cd=cadmium, Hg=mercury, Pb=lead
(the names are indicated on the battery/rechargeable battery e.g. below the rubbish
bin symbol shown to the left).
You may return used batteries/rechargeable batteries free of charge at the official collection
points of your community, in our stores, or wherever batteries/rechargeable batteries are sold!
You thus fulfil your statutory obligations and contribute to the protection of the environment.
