Before Grilling

Danger
Burning hazard!
Only use the grill with the ash
collection tray pushed in. Do
not pull out the ash collection
tray from the sheet metal
holder when it is hot or when
there are still hot embers or
charcoal bits in the tray.
– Keep the charcoal in the small grill
chamber sufficiently away from the
vent slide so as to prevent embers or
hot charcoal from falling out from the
grill chamber.

Health risk!
Do not use any charcoal that
has been pre-treated with
flammable liquids. Use only
high-quality pure charcoal or a
mix of charcoal and firewood.
Warning
Riskof damage!
To prolong the service life of
the grill, make sure that the hot
charcoal and burning wood do
not come in direct contact with
the grill chamber walls.
– Never rub or scratch the outer case of
the hot grill during the initial pre-firing
procedure.
• Before using the grill for the first time,
smear it with oil and then pre-fire it for
at least 3 hours so as to protect the grill
body from intensive corrosion and to
burn production residues, if any.
Important: Always store the grill in an
oiled condition and covered with a
canvass.

• Prior to first use, wash the cooking
grate with warm soapy water. Then
wash it with clean water and dry
thoroughly.
• Rub the outer surfaces of the grill with
vegetable oil or use vegetable oil for
spraying the grill gently. Do not treat
any rust spots and the ash collection
tray with vegetable oil.
• A sheet metal container must be
placed under the grease discharge
opening at all times. Place an empty
open sheet metal container (e.g., a
soup can) in grease container holder
(23).
• Observe the instructions for starting
the fire. You may use charcoal or
firewood.
• Start the fire with some 3.5 - 4 kg of
charcoal. This amount should be
sufficient for the pre-firing (condition-
ing) of the grill.
• Put a sufficient amount of a fluid lighter
(according
to
the
instructions) on the charcoal. Open the
grill chamber lids and wait 2-3 minutes
for the liquid to soak in. Alternatively,
you may use common solid firelighters
as well.
• Open the vent slide of the small grill
chamber to 1.5 - 2.5 cm. Open the
exhaust flap of the smoke pipe half
way.
• Ignite the charcoal with a long match.
Let the charcoal burn with the lids open
until a bright glowing layer has devel-
oped (approx. 20 minutes).
