12. Tips and Notices

As already mentioned, the power pack is in standby mode after switching off via the
power button on your ATX housing.
So it is not separated from the mains! A TV functions similar, for example, when you
put it in standby mode with the remote control.
The power pack still "consumes" electricity in standby mode. In order to save ener-
gy, you should turn the power pack off via the mains switch when you are not using
your computer.
The same applies of course to all other devices connected to the computer, e.g.
monitor, scanner, loudspeakers etc.
Devices without a "real" mains switch (e.g. many loudspeakers, some monitors and
all other devices with an external power pack/AC power unit) can be separated from
the mains voltage via a socket shelf with on/off switch.
The standby power consumption of a complete PC system may easily add up
to 50 W. Already after one day, one kWh (1 kilowatt hour) is uselessly "con-
sumed" and converted to heat.
The purchase of a socket shelf with on/off switch can therefore already pay off after
one year.
Simultaneously turning on all devices (PC, monitor, printer, etc.) may lead to the
blowout of the fuse of the corresponding circuit as the starting current is too
high.
