3.1. "Edit Partition Table", Creating and Deleting Partitions

This menu offers you the functions to create and delete partitions using the keys
INS (insert) and DEL (delete). The cursor keys allow to you shift the section displayed
on the screen if not all the partitions can be shown in the window. In addition to the
single partitions, the respective operating system, the data management procedure,
the occupied section in form of start and end cylinders and the length of a partition in
Mbytes are displayed.
To create a new partition, you have to move the illuminated bar to a hitherto
unused section using the cursor keys, then press INS. This will cause a window to
appear in which the start and end cylinders of the partition to be created are proposed,
taking into account possible limitations caused by your DOS-version. These values
can be confirmed using the ENTER key or modified if necessary. The programme
automatically carries out a plausibility check of your entries to avoid overlapping with
already existing partitions. When creating a partition, SCSIFMT independently carries
out all necessary procedures of initialisation (creating FAT, boot sector and main
directory), so that no further editing procedures are required. If necessary, the
operating system can then be transferred to the corresponding drive using the "SYS"
command of DOS.
To delete partitions, move the illuminated bar on the partition to be deleted and
press DEL. For safety reasons, the programme asks for your confirmation before
definitively deleting a partition, so that unintended data deletion is avoided.
Attention:
When you delete a partition, the data and programmes written on it are
irretrievably lost, even when you create a new partition within the same
section afterwards.
3.2. "BIOS Translation Mode", Changing Drive Parameters
This menu allows you to redefine the type of translation mode used by the SCSI
BIOS from SCSI block addresses to the BIOS notation in presentation modes of
sectors, heads and cylinders. This option only exists if the corresponding drive has not
yet been partitioned or if all its partitions have been deleted.
As a SCSI device basically can only be addressed via a block address numbered
consecutively, whereas the BIOS of the PC intends addressing the hard disk via a
cylinder/head/sector number, it is necessary to translate the SCSI block address in an
appropriate way into the BIOS coordinates. The BIOS found on the SCSI host adapter
uses the following algorithm to define the BIOS coordinates:
