1 Operating Elements and Connections

1 Channel display
2 Buttons for adjusting the receiving channel
3 Control for readjusting the video level;
the video level is adjusted according to standard
(1 Vpp) and can be modified to 0.5 – 1.5 Vpp
4 Reception antenna; polarization to be selected by
vertical or horizontal turning
5 2-pole terminal strip for the control channel output
for connecting a signal device or another addition-
al unit
With activated control channel of the correspond-
ing transmitter, the pin "switching channel out" is
connected to ground.
(also see fig. 3 and chapter 4.2.3)
Pin "GND" = ground
6 SMA jack "antenna" for the supplied antenna or
another 5.8 GHz antenna from the MONACOR
range
7 Phono jack "video out" for the video signal output
for connecting a monitor
8 Phono jack "audio A out" for the left-hand audio
signal output (audio A)
9 Phono jack "audio B out" for the right-hand audio
signal output (audio B)
10 Jack "DC 7-30 V" for power supply with 7 – 30 V
(200 mA at 12 V);
centre contact = positive pole;
required low-voltage plug 5.5/2.1 mm
(outside/inside diameter)

2 Safety Notes

This unit corresponds to the directive for electromag-
netic compatibility 89/336/EEC.
The unit is suitable for indoor use only. Protect it
against dripping water and splash water, high air
humidity, and very high or low temperatures (admis-
sible ambient temperature range -10 °C to +55 °C).
For cleaning only use a dry, soft cloth; never use
chemicals or water.
No liability for any damage will be accepted if the
unit is used for other purposes than originally
intended, if it is not correctly connected or operated
or not repaired in an expert way.
If the receiver is to be put out of operation defini-
tively, take it to a local recycling plant for a disposal
which is not harmful to the environment.
3 Applications
In combination with a 5.8 GHz transmitter of the
MONACOR AV-58..TX series, the receiver AV-5840R
serves for wireless audio and video transmission. For
setting up a wireless video surveillance system,
merely a video camera and a monitor are additionally
required.
The transmission range largely depends on the
local conditions. Without any obstacles between the
transmitter and the receiver, the maximum range is
500 m, in buildings it is max. 30 – 40 m, depending on
the condition of the walls and ceilings. The range can
be increased several times over by mounting a recep-
tion antenna with gain to the AV-5840R.

4 Operation

4.1 Placing the transmitter and the receiver
Practical experience has shown that an optimum
reception is achieved when placing the units at a
height of minimum 1.5 m to 2 m above the ground.
Prior to final mounting, a trial run is recommended as
the transmission quality can be substantially changed
by displacing the receiver and the transmitter by a few
centimetres only.
4.2 Connecting units
Switch off any units prior to connecting them. Always
connect the power supply for the receiver last. When
changing existing connections, first disconnect the
power supply for the receiver and switch off any
connected units.
4.2.1 Surveillance monitor
1) Connect the video input of the monitor via a 75 Ω
coaxial cable to the jack "video out" (7).
2) For audio transmission, connect the audio input of
the monitor via a shielded audio cable to the jack
"audio A out" (8) and, in case of stereo sound,
additionally to the jack "audio B out" (9).
4.2.2 TV set
It is also possible to connect a TV set instead of a
monitor. Depending on the connection jacks provided
on the TV set, an adapter may be required for this
purpose (e. g. MONACOR VC-162)
If the TV set is not provided with a video and audio
input, the receiver can be connected to the antenna
jack of the TV set via an RF modulator (e. g.
MONACOR VAM-24).
4.2.3 Signal device or other additional unit
If the transmitter used is provided with a control chan-
nel, it is possible to activate an optical or acoustic sig-
nal device or another additional unit connected to the
AV-5840R via this channel (e. g. video recorder for
automatic start of a recording). The connection is
shown in fig. 3 where the unit to be connected is sym-
bolized by R1.
If triggering requires a current exceeding 80 mA,
insert a relay or a switching amplifier. When connect-
ing an inductive load (e. g. relay), the protective diode
D1 must be connected in parallel in reverse direction!
