Detaching the front grille
Hold both sides at the top of the front grille and pull to-
wards you. The grille will then come away easily. To
attach, push the four corners with the HITACHI badge
at the woofer side lightly.
Operating level control
The tweeter level control is at the front.

Tone control
If the bassis too weak for a program sourceand if it is
boosted by the amplifier's bass control and the loudness
switch, it may be clipped by the amplifier and thesecon-
trols may actually distort the bass. Also, theamplitude
of the speakerconesmay be increased too much and the
sound may appear to be unnatural. Therefore,it is best
to usethe amplifier normallyand refrainfrom usingthe
tone control. When it is necessaryto boost the basswith
the tone control, useit with a low frequencyfilter (or a
subsonicfilter) attachedto the amplifier and makesure
that the maximum input level applied to the speaker
system is less than 120W.
Incidentally, the volume of the bass can be enhanced if
the tweeter control on the speakersystemis turned
down.
• Maximum input
The maximum input for the HS-371 is 120W. These
speakers can withstandshort peaksof 120Wfor music,
but they may be damaged i f the average i nput levelis
continuously exceeded.
Manyrecording nowadays c ontainmanyhighpeaklev-
els, althoughthe average i nput is comparatively small.
If youdo not bearthisin mind,partof thesound may
beclippedby the amplifier, a ndyou maynot realize it.
So alwayskeep an eyeon the position of the volume
control on the amplifier.
Turning the control clockwise towards MAX O
This increases the treble.
NATURAL
This position is for normal operation.
Turning the control counterclockwise
This decreases the treble.
The levels can be varied a maximum of 6 dB from MAX
to MIN.

Adjust it in
When this speakersystemis broughtnear a color TV,

so make sure that you install the speakers more than
50 cm away from the TV.

Whenusingtheamplifier's speaker selector s witch(A +
B), make sure that you combine the HS-371 with a
speakersystem having an impedanceof more than
8 ohms.
The impedance of the HS-371 is 8 ohms and so there
may be trouble if you connectit with a speaker s ystem
of lessthan8 ohmssincethe combined impedance w ill
beunder4 ohms.Youmightdamage t heamplifier.
Usea soft dry cloth to wipeoff dirt anddust. If you

use a chemically treated cloth, or leave it on the
cabinet,you may causethe cabinet's top coatingto
peel off or be discoloured.
Do not drivethe speaker s yaemwith continuous sinu-

soidal wave signals of over 6.3V RMS.
The cartridgeon your turntable will generate an ultra-
low frequency (several H z) if a warpedrecord is being
played.Thiscauses t he coneto vibrateatalarge ampli-
tude and this brings about distortion since the woofer
respondsto low frequencies. In such cases, u se the low
filter (or subsonicfilter) attachedto the amplifier.
Youneed not usethelow filterwhenplaying backtapes
or listening to FM broadcasts.
