MEASURING BLOOD PRESSURE

KEY INSTRUCTIONS FOR A RELIABLE MEASUREMENT
1.
Avoid smoking, consuming caffeinated or alcoholic beverages,
eating, and exercising 30 minutes before taking the measure-
ment.
2.
Empty the bladder and stay in a quiet, comfortable room for 5
minutes.
3.
Sit on a chair with a backrest and relax for 5 minutes before taking
the measurement. Keep your feet flat on the ground and avoid
crossing your legs.
4.
Remove any bulky or thick clothing that may constrict the arm. To
avoid constriction, do not roll up your shirt sleeves – they will not
interfere with the cuff if worn over them.
5.
Ensure that the cuff is positioned 1-2 cm above the elbow
(Fig. B.1).
6.
Check that the cuff is at about heart level (Fig. B.2) and aligned
with the brachial artery (ARTERY) (Fig. B.3).
7.
Avoid tightening the cuff (8) excessively, as this can signifi-
cantly restrict blood circulation.
8.
To ensure an accurate reading, properly regulate the deflation
process. It is advisable to deflate at a rate of 2-3 mmHg per sec-
ond, or a decrease of 1-2 notches on the manometer (5).
IMPORTANT: Do not press the stethoscope too firmly against the
cuff, as this could lead to inaccurate diastolic (minimum) pressure
measurements.
WARNING!
The reading from this device is not a diagnosis.
It cannot replace the advice of your primary care provider, particu-
larly if the results do not match your symptoms.
It is important not to depend exclusively on this measurement; also
take into account any other symptoms and the overall condition
of the patient.
If needed, call a doctor or an ambulance.
