2.2. Commissioning
To perform an analysis the CANmonitor is connected to the bus via the connection 1 or 2. After a
successful initialization of the processor the device tests the LEDs. They come on simultaneously for a
short time (approx. 0.5 s). The CANmonitor then starts to determine the baud rate.
The other measurements (level test, checking for overshoots/ undershoots, slope steepness and error
frame determination) are started after determination of the baud rate and are cyclically repeated as long
as the CANmonitor is connected to the supply voltage.
2.3. Display LEDs
The result of the analysis is indicated on the 12-LED display of the CANmonitor. Each LED represents a
bus state or a warning. The meaning of the indicators will be explained below.
CAN OK
Serious CAN Failure
CAN-High locked
CAN-Low locked
Over-/Undershoots
The CANmonitor sets this LED for each received message and resets it
cyclically. During the normal operation this LED flickers according to the
message communication. The brighter it comes on, the more messages
are evaluated.
LED colour: green
A serious CAN error has occured (e.g. a CAN-High or CAN-Low signal
shorted to GND).
LED colour: red
This LED is activated when the CANmonitor detects a short circuit of the
CAN-High line to a constant potential. This is assumed by the current
software for CAN-High signal levels of about 0 V referred to ground. The
LED remains set until the error no longer occurs when a new evaluation is
made or a differential signal between CAN-High and CAN-Low is
produced. This check is repeated every 6 s.
LED colour: yellow
This LED is activated when the CANmonitor detects a short circuit of the
CAN-Low line to a constant potential. This is assumed by the current
software for CAN-Low signal levels of about 0 V referred to ground. The
LED remains set until the error no longer occurs when a new evaluation is
made. This check is repeated every 6 s.
LED colour: yellow
If the CANmonitor sets this LED, the differential CAN signal of a received
message is affected by overshoots or undershoots to such a point that a
trouble-free communication with the bus can no longer be ensured.
LED colour: yellow
