1.4. Measuring principle
As regards communication the CANmonitor is a passive device which functions by analysing the static
and dynamic parameters of the CAN signal. To evaluate the signal shape the differential level between the
CAN-High and CAN-Low signals is utilized.
The protocol-related contents of the CAN messages have no influence on the function of the device
(exception: error frames). This is why the CANmonitor is suitable for all CAN protocols.
2.
Operation and use of the device
2.1. Connection of the device
The CANmonitor is fitted with two 9-pole Sub-D plugs for the CAN connection. The supply voltage for the
CANmonitor is also fed via the CAN plug. The CAN bus cable and supply voltage can be connected either
to connection 1 (plug top left) or connection 2 (plug top right). Optional extensions (in preparation) can
only be operated via the connection 1.
For the simple use of the CANmonitor a wired connection can be used to directly connect the device to the
CAN network.

In addition to the contacts for the CAN signal and supply, the
CANmonitor uses further control signal contacts on the Sub-D plug. Only
approved add-on components may be connected to these contacts.
