INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE
Scope: These instructions cover all R54549-26-PK, R54549-28-PK and R54549-32-PK Rocket Blunt Dissection Chest Drain
Kits and derivatives.
The products are intended for use by physicians trained and experienced in diagnostic and interventional techniques. It is
recommended that British Thoracic Society Guidelines for the insertion of chest drainage tubes are followed.
Upon removal from package, inspect the product to ensure no damage has occurred.
Product Description: The Rocket Blunt Dissection Chest Drain Pack contains a Disposable gown, fenestrated drape, skin
preparation sponges and gallipot, forceps, No 11 Blade Scalpel, 10ml syringe, 20ml syringe, green needles, orange needle,
tubing set connectors, clear drainage catheter with radiopaque stripe, suture and dressing pack.
Indications: The product has been designed for blunt dissection technique introduction of a chest tube for drainage of air
and/or pleural fluid.
Contraindications: Non-pleural drainage.
Instructions For Use:
1.
Following local hospital policy, and wearing the sterile gown included, prepare the chest tube
insertion site with an approved solution such as povidone-iodine and drape with fenestrated
drape included to maintain and aseptic technique.
2.
Identify and mark the insertion point following BTS Guidelines, with specific attention paid to the
'safe–triangle'.
3.
After injection of local anaesthetic e.g. lignocaine, make a small skin incision approx 10mm. and
then continue administer additional local anaesthetic to the skin and underlying tissues
4.
Allow the local anaesthetic to take effect. Use the scalpel to make an incision large enough that
you will be able to place the catheter through it when you have created the path to the pleural
space.
CAUTION: Insertion should be just ABOVE the rib to avoid damage to the intercostal
5.
By opening and closing the forceps make a path through the subcutaneous tissue and muscle into
the pleural space.
6.
Place the introducer in to the 4th fenestration on the catheter. Use the malleable introducer to
support and position the drain as you insert the catheter into the chest. The catheter should be
aimed apically for a pneumothorax, and basally for fluid
7.
Insert the catheter gently through the chest wall, when the handle of the introducer nears the chest
wall, remove it from the catheter so all the fenestrations will enter the chest.
8.
Secure the drain by suturing the drain twice. The technique chosen should include adequate skin
and subcutaneous tissue to ensure it is secure.
CAUTION: Ensure all side holes of the chest tube are positioned within the pleural space.
9.
The chest tube can now be sutured to the skin and is ready for connection to a suitable sealed
drainage system such as the Rocket Blue Bottle or Rocket Ambulatory Bag
10. Confirm the correct positioning of the drain with imaging as soon as possible.
