Sumpter Valley Mallet
Steam Loco, Sound
THE PROTOTYPE
In the 1920s, the Uintah Railway
in Utah and Colorado bought two
modern Mallet locomotives from
Baldwin. To this day, these loco-
motives are the largest narrow
gauge locomotives that ever oper-
ated in the United States. When
service on the Uintah Railway
was discontinued, the two power-
ful Mallets were sold to the
Sumpter Valley Railway, which
connected rural towns in Oregon.
The locos were equipped with
tenders and soon hauled most of
the trains on this scenic line. After
the Sumpter Valley was closed
down,
the
Guatemala, where they ran on the
International Railroad of Central
America until the 1960s.
THE MODEL
This detailed replica features:

OPERATION
Preparation
Place the loco and tender on the
tracks. Plug the included connect-
ing wire in the sockets on the
locomotive and the tender. Push
the tender and locomotive togeth-
er to engage the couplers.
Attention! The cable can be
damaged by rough handling.
Operating Modes
This model has a four-way power
control switch mounted inside the
cab (Fig. 1):
Position 0: All power off
to
Position 1: Power to lights and
Position 2: Power to lights, smoke
Position 3: Power to lights, smoke
Lighting
This model features directional
lighting. The model has a "flat"
multi-purpose socket, with a
removable cover, on the rear of
the tender (Fig. 7). This socket
can be used to provide track
power to LGB cars with lighting or
sound electronics.
To remove the cover of the sock-
et, pull it straight out. If the cover
is tight, gently use a small straight
screwdriver to pry it out. (Do not
pull out the rectangular outer
housing.)
Hint: The rear lantern on the ten-
der is powered directly from the
tracks. When operating the model
with the Multi-Train System, this
lantern will be illuminated continu-
ously.
Smoke Generator
This model is equipped with a
smoke generator. A small supply
of LGB Smoke and Cleaning
Fluid is included with this model.
