After the device has indicated that the batteries are low, it may continue to operate for a certain
period of time, even though the level of performance will be reduced significantly. Replace or
recharge the batteries at the first opportunity.
Use headphones when possible. Not only do they extend the life of your batteries, but they also
eliminate all outside noise.
Large pieces of iron are difficult to ignore and may give confusing signals. The all-metal mode
will help you determine whether the target is iron or not. Iron objects will generally give a
stronger signal than the objects you are looking for.
When the all-metal mode is used on the beach, the device may react to the beach itself and
emit a signal. If so, adjust the DISCRIMINATION level to the point where the device no longer
reacts to the beach itself.
If you are having doubts as to the value of an object you have discovered, you should dig it up
to make sure. Experience will teach you how the detector responds so you will become more
confident as time goes on.
8. Detection Range
The detection range varies depending on the size of the object, how long it has been in the
ground and the type of soil it is buried in.
Compact soils are ideal and yield the best results. If the object has been buried for some time it
will have interacted with the salts in the ground, which will make the object appear larger to the
detector.
The worst conditions are found in loose soil or freshly dug earth. Detection is also difficult if the
object has only been buried a short while. The detection range is reduced under these
circumstances.
Ninety percent of all artefacts are found within 6" / 15cm of the surface. Adverse conditions can
reduce the detection range by more than half.
9. Determining Target Size and Depth
An experienced user who is highly familiar with his metal detector will often be able to determine
an object's size, shape and depth before he unearths it. This is possible if you know exactly how
to interpret the audio signals emitted by the CS2MP. Listen for special characteristics whenever
the device emits a signal. Determine over how large an area you get a detector signal and try to
"outline" the object before you dig it up.
When you have unearthed the object, compare the object's size, shape and depth with the
estimate you made before you started digging. As time goes on, you will find yourself
increasingly able to "read" the signals.
10. The Importance of the Right Approach
Treasure hunting can be a profitable and rewarding activity for the patient and diligent user.
Time spent researching to locate a worthwhile site for a search can become time wasted if your
search is hasty and erratic. Plan your approach to each individual site beforehand.
It is also important to keep the detector head as close to the ground as possible. The search
head should skim the ground in order to keep the loss of detection range down to a minimum.
Working slowly and methodically will enable you to hear the faintest of signals, thereby
increasing the number of finds.
