SAFETY EQUIPMENT

1. Safety Valve
Each closed water heating system must be fitted with a type-tested, spring-loaded diaphragm
safety valve.
Extract from the German standard DIN 1988-200, Technical Rules for Drinking Water Installations:

For closed drinking water systems with a nominal volume of more than 5000 l and/or a heat output
of 250 kW the safety valve must be selected according to the manufacturer's instructions.
The following regulations apply to the installation of diaphragm safety valve:
The safety valves must be fitted cold in the drinking water supply. No shut-off valves, constrictions
or screens should be located between the outlet of the safety valve and the drinking water heater.
The safety valves must be easily accessible and should be located in the vicinity of the drinking
water heater. The supply line to the safety valve must be provided at least in the nominal diameter
of the safety valve and with a length of ≤10 x DN.
The safety valve must be arranged so that the connecting discharge line can be laid with a slope.
It is advisable to install the safety valve above the drinking water heater, so that it can be replaced
without draining it.
The following information is valid for the nominal setting pressure (operating pressure) of safety
valves:
The safety valves are supplied by the manufacturer set. A safety valve with the same or a smaller
nominal setting pressure than the maximum operating pressure of the water heater must be
installed. The maximum pressure in the cold mains water pipe must be at least 20% below the
nominal setting pressure of the safety valve (see table). If the maximum pressure in the cold
drinking water pipes is above this level, a pressure reduction valve must be fitted.
