is suitable for leisure activities and works even
if the vehicle has broken down. This assumes
that there is sufficient current in the battery,
of course. The winch can cope with high
amperages and is therefore equipped with
a system of connectors for high amperages
that can handle the current flow safely. It is
important for you to understand that the winch
produces more heat the longer the distance
being winched. Heat is also generated when
you are feeding out the line. At the same
time, the winch is consuming current. As far as
possible, unwind the line using free spooling.
If winching takes place for an extended period
without the winch motor being cooled, the
motor will sustain damage. If the vehicle's
engine is idling during winching, the battery
will be drained more rapidly than it being
charged. Take care to ensure that you do not
drain the battery so much that you cannot start
the vehicle.

OPERATING THE WINCH

The winch is operated with a rocker switch to
rotate the drum forwards or backwards.
FIG. 3
HOW THE WINCH REACTS TO LOAD
Winches are classified according to their
traction. The winch's tractive force is greatest
when only the first layers of line are on the
drum. The tractive force diminishes as the
layers are built up. This is the mathematics on
which winching is based. If the winch's capacity
is exceeded, the winch can break or the line
can snap. If you consider now how your winch
is going to be used, you can avoid major
problems later. You also have to check that
the winch's assembly system and the vehicle's
chassis can cope with the winch's nominal
load.
TENSIONING THE LINE
The service life of the line is directly related
to how it is used and looked after. In order
for the line to enjoy a long service life, it is
important for it to be tensioned. When the
line is kept tensioned, this prevents the line's
outer layer from being pinched and deforming
the inner layers. When a new line is used
for the first time, it must be wound onto the
drum with a load of at least 227 kg. Follow the
instructions set out below in order to keep the
line tensioned while it is being wound onto the
winch drum.
1.
Select a flat, horizontal surface that is
sufficiently large to unwind the entire
length of the line.
2.
Turn the clutch knob on the winch to the
"Free Spool" position. Grip the hood strap
and pull out the line until five turns of line
remain on the drum. When the line has
been unwound, turn the clutch knob on
the winch to the "Engaged" position.
3.
Attach the hook end of the line to a
suitable anchor point and reverse the
vehicle away from the anchor point until
the line only has a little slack remaining.
Apply the parking brake, engage a gear
or the parking mode and turn off the
vehicle's engine before you leave the
vehicle.
4.
Winch the remaining slack onto the drum.
Wear gloves. Keep the line tensioned with
one hand and carefully press the line to
the side of the drum, so that there are
no gaps between the turns of line on the
drum. Check that the line unwinds from
the lower part of the drum, not from its
upper part, as otherwise the automatic
load-holding brake will not work correctly.
(If the line unwinds from the top, you
have been operating the winch "out"
instead of "in" when winding.)
5.
