24 Start up of cassettes

5.10 Cassette Storage

Sartorius Stedim Biotech filter cassettes can be stored after use.
To avoid microbial contamination preservatives have to be used.
All membranes will lose their filtration performance if allowed to dry out or
freeze. Always store filter cassettes in moist condition.

5.10.1 Short Term Storage

We recommend the following preservatives for cassettes assembled in a holder short
term storage (up to 8 weeks):
Preservative
Formaldehyde
Ethanol
Do not use denatured alcohol
NaOH
* Hydrosart can be stored in 20–40% by weight Ethanol
®
For short term storage proceed as follows:
Clean the filter cassettes [Æ Chapter "5.8 Cassette Cleaning", page 21].

Recirculate the preservative for 5 minutes through the system at the same flow
t
rate used to flush the filter cassettes. The preservative must flow through both
permeate outlets.
Close feed inlet, retentate outlet and both permeate outlets.

Do not allow the cassettes to dry out or freeze.

5.10.2 Long Term Storage

We recommend the following preservatives for cassette storage outside of the holder
(if storage exceeds 6 – 8 weeks):
Preservative
Formaldehyde
Ethanol
Do not use denatured alcohol
* Hydrosart can be stored in 20–40% by weight Ethanol

For long term storage proceed as follows:
Clean the filter cassettes [Æ Chapter "5.8 Cassette Cleaning", page 21].

through the system at the same flow rate used to flush the filter cassettes.
The preservative must flow through both permeate outlets.
Remove the filter cassette from the holding device.

Store the filter cassettes in a closed container or bag as follows:

− Plastic bag:
Seal the filter cassette together with 50 ml of preservative into the bag.
− Container:
Pour preservative over the filter cassette until it is completely immersed,
then close the container.
After Storage, the storage solution has to be washed from the outer surface with

purified water before installation into a holding device.
