the purpose for which it is prescribed. The
healthcare professional is responsible for

practitioners, care providers involved in the
patient's care, and the patient.

• Be careful that the straps are not so tight
that they interfere with circulation.
• After heating splinting material, always
check its temperature before applying it to
the patient.
CARE AND CLEANING
• The splint will lose its shape in temperatures
over 135°F (57°C). It should be kept away
from sources of heat such as ovens, hot
water, open flames, and sunny car windows.
• The splint may be cleaned with soap and
lukewarm water. The straps may be washed
with soap and water, but the adhesive portion
should not be moistened. The splint and
straps should be allowed to dry thoroughly
before reapplication of the splint.
PROCEDURE
The splint blank can be applied to either hand—
simply invert the splint blank.
1. Heat splint blank in water heated to
approximately 160°F (70°C) until pliable.
(Refer to the instructions for Rolyan splinting
materials for information about working with
specific splinting materials.)
C
2. Remove from heat pan and place on a towel
on a flat surface. Blot excess water.
3. Standing in front of the patient, position the
splint with the palmar bar on the ulnar side of
the hand. Mold splint over the dorsum of the
forearm and then the digits.
4. Mold the palmar bar around the ulnar side of
the hand (A) and through the thumb web
space (B). Note that, if the splinting material
has not been coated to prevent accidental
bonding, the palmar bar should not be
allowed to touch the splint; material that has
been coated can be popped apart when cool.
5. The splint can be trimmed and the edges
flared if necessary.
6. Apply appropriate straps. Hook and loop
material can be fastened to the splint to
secure the palmar bar. A completed splint is
shown in C.
