7. CHARGING CYCLE AND LEDs

THE CHARGER HAS THREE BASIC CHARGING FACES:
– I-phase: the charging power is approximately 2 A
– U1-phase: (main charging phase) consent charging voltage of 14.3 V
– U2-phase: (maintenance charging phase) consent charging voltage of 13.8 V
THE LEDs:
– LED "Netz" (power): indicates that the charger is connected to a 230 V/50
Hz power supply.
– LED "Verpolt" (incorrect polarity): after setting the battery type (Pb/Li-Ion( the
charger will go into test mode. If the battery is connected with the wrong
polarity the LED "Verpolt" will light up.
– LED "Defekt" (malfunction): if the voltage of the correctly connected battery is
over 14.3 V then the LED "Defekt" will start blinking.
– LED "Test": the battery is first charged with a constant current (I-phase) until the
charging voltage of 14.3 V is reached. Then the voltage is kept constantly at
this level (U1-phase) and charging current is adapted. The fuller the battery,
the lower the charging current. If the charging current is smaller than 300 mA,
charging is discontinued and the charger will automatically switch to the test
mode. The LED "Test" is switched on and the LED "Laden" is switched off.
During this test the battery has a load of a defined current. If the voltage of
the charged battery falls under the nominal voltage, it can be assumed that
the battery has a high internal resistance, and that sulphation has occurred. In
this case the charger rates the battery as defective and the LED "defekt" lights
up. If the battery passes the test, the LED "Fertig" (finished) will light up and
the charger will go into maintenance mode (U2-phase).
– LED "Fertig" (finished): indicates that the battery is fully loaded.
– LED "Erhalten" (maintain): indicates that the fully loaded status of the battery
is maintained with a trickle charge at 13.8 V. If a charging current of 200
mA is reached, the charger will automatically switch to pause mode. The
maintenance process will then repeat itself after one hour when you use a Pb
battery. For a Li-Ion starter battery this pause will last ca. 24 hours.
