Safety Instructions
a) General information
The guarantee will be void if damage is incurred resulting from non-compliance with the
operating instructions! Liability for any and all consequential damage is excluded!
We do not assume any liability for damage to property or personal injury caused by
improper use or the failure to observe the safety instructions! In such cases the warranty
is voided!
• For safety reasons, any unauthorized conversion and/or modifications to the product are
not permitted. Never dismantle the product.
• Do not expose the product to extreme temperatures, strong vibrations or strong mechanical
stress.
• The product must not get damp or wet, it is intended only for use in dry, indoor locations.
• The product is not a toy and should be kept out of the reach of children!
• The device is exclusively designed for use at a mains supply of 230V~/50Hz.
• Do not leave the packaging material lying around carelessly, as such materials can
become dangerous toys in the hands of children.
• In commercial and industrial facilities, the regulations for the prevention of accidents as
laid down by the professional trade association for electrical equipment and devices
need to be observed.
b) Installation
• The product may only be installed by a qualified technician who is familiar with the
relevant regulations (e.g. VDE, German electrical wiring regulations).
Improper work carried out at the mains voltage endangers not only your life but also the
lives of others!
If you do not have the expertise required for the installation, do not install it yourself but
ask a qualified technician.
• The thermostat may only be installed and operated in enclosed housings. Only the shaft
for the dial control may be exposed outside the housing. The dial control supplied must
be mounted on the shaft (or a similarly suitable dial control).
• The prescribed safety clearances between the mains supply carrying parts (contacts to
the thermostat and/ connections etc) and touchable housing elements (the device, into
which the thermostat is being installed) must be maintained.
• The device into which the thermostat is to be installed must be disconnected from the
mains supply and all other cables/leads.
• Capacitors in the device into which the thermostat is to be installed can retain charge for
long periods of time even after the device is switched off and disconnected from the mains
supply.
There is danger to life through an electric shock!
• The connection load rating of the thermostat (see "Technical Data") may not be
exceeded.
• The metal housing of the thermostat must be connected to the protective earth conductor
(earth cable) (PE). There are two connection contacts on the thermostat for this purpose,
they are marked with an earthing symbol.
If the protective earth conductor is incorrectly attached or not attached, there is a danger
that in the case of an electrical fault, touchable conductive parts of the device may cause
fatal electric shocks.
• When laying the capillary tube ensure that it is not kinked, squashed or damaged in any
other manner.
The capillary tube can and may not be shortened or cut. Doing so would render the
thermostat inoperable!
Connection
w w w. c o n r a d . c o m
Version 01/09
The thermostat has 5 contacts. Connections "3" and "4" are the switching contact.
Connection 6 is for the freezer light (for example). If the dial control on the thermostat is turned fully to the
left (thermostat off) the connection between 3 and 6 will be broken.
The protective earth conductor connection carries an earthing symbol and absolutely must be connected
to the protective earth conductor of the device it is being built into.
Have the installation and connection carried out by a professional if you are in any doubt.
Mode of operation
In the long capillary tube which is connected to the thermostat, there is a fluid which expands with heat.
In the thermostat at the end of the capillary tube there is a so-called pressure sensor which is mechanically
pre-tensioned via the setting shaft.
If the setting shaft is turned right past the activation point, then the electrical circuit is closed (see figure
upper left, contacts "3" and "4" are connected).
A cooling element now supplied with power reduces the temperature in the freezer; the fluid in the capillary
tube also cools and shrinks in the process.
At a certain temperature the actuator on the pressure sensor breaks the power connection.
The temperature now begins to rise, the fluid in the capillary tube begins to expand again.
At a certain temperature the power connection is closed again and the procedure is repeated.
The temperature at which the thermostat breaks the power circuit can be adjusted using the setting shaft.
As this is not a digital control, it is not possible to set an exact specific temperature using this thermostat.
