THE PANERAI RADIOMIR 1940
3 DAYS WATCH
Since 1860, Guido Panerai & Figlio in Florence had been producing precision
instruments with a high level of technical content, becoming a supplier to the
Royal Italian Navy.
Officine Panerai began to produce watches in 1936 with the first prototype of
the Radiomir. In the following years, several modifications were made to
develop watches which were more resistant under extreme conditions: the
Radiomir 1940 with lugs formed from the same block of the case and the
Luminor 1950 with the innovative device protecting the crown were born.
In 1993, Officine Panerai presented for the first time a collection for the civilian
public, thus becoming one of the undisputed leaders in the haute horlogerie
sports sector.
The Radiomir 1940 is an evolution and also a substantial development of the
first Radiomir series. In response to the very strict requirements expressed by
the Royal Italian Navy, the watch was strengthened to become even more
resistant under extreme conditions.
The first change was the increase in the thickness of the case so that the lugs
could be formed directly from the same steel block of the case.
The wire loop strap attachments were replaced by an extremely solid
monobloc construction.
The new design also modified the system of attaching the strap by enabling
the insertion of a little removable device between the two lugs, which made
the strap quicker and easier to replace. These important structural
modifications increased significantly the overall resistance of the watch to
accidental shocks. The Radiomir 1940 models are also characterised by a
cushion-shaped case with more pronounced edges on the side, while the
crown is cylindrical rather than conical.

HE CASE
The Panerai Radiomir 1940 3 Days watch has a 42 mm case available, among others,
in AISI 316L steel, Panerai Goldtech
and white gold.
Gold is a very dense metal, highly ductile and malleable. The special alloys used by
Officine Panerai are notable for their great resistance and natural colour. The white
gold contains 15% palladium (PD) to give the desired white colour. To preserve the
tonal characteristics typical of this kind of gold, it is not rhodium plated.
Panerai Goldtech
is an alloy consisting of gold, copper and other metals, ideal for
use in haute horlogerie on account of its excellent technical properties and elegant
colour. The proportion of gold is 75% (18 carat), and other elements are added to it in
varying proportions. The Panerai Goldtech
special alloy with an unusually high percentage of copper, which gives great depth to
the colour, together with a quantity of platinum, which contributes to reducing the
oxidation of the metal.
AISI 316L stainless steel is highly resistant to corrosion and hypoallergenic, making it
ideal for contact with the skin. The Panerai watches created for the Italian Navy were
made of austenitic stainless steel, a solid, reliable material, which was also resistant
to the extreme environmental conditions in which the commandos operated. Officine
Panerai uses the low-carbon variant of the AISI 316L alloy: the lower amount of
carbon improves its welding qualities.
The case is made using manufacturing techniques involving many complex
operations which ensure a remarkable aesthetic finish and at the same time great
resistance in terms of water- and shock-resistance. The screw-down crown has a
cylindrical shape and is personalised Panerai.
The crystal is of sapphire, made of corundum, a very hard material (second only to
diamond), free of impurities, transparent, resistant to abrasion and with anti-reflective
treatment. The screw-in back has a sapphire crystal window, enabling the movement
and its haute horlogerie finish to be admired. On the back of the case the case
number, the sequential number of the watch with the number produced, the material
and the maximum depth of use are engraved. The water-resistance of your watch is
