General information:
FX5 - FX9 are stepper motor driven valves for precise
control of refrigerant mass flow in air conditioning,
heat pumps, industrial cooling process and close
control systems as: Expansion valves and Liquid
injection valves.
!
Safety instructions:
• Read operating instructions thoroughly. Failure
to comply can result in device failure, system
damage or personal injury.
• In a severely contaminated system, avoid
breathing acid vapors and avoid contact with skin
from contaminated refrigerant / lubricants.
Failure to do so could result in injury.
• Before opening any system make sure pressure in
system is brought to and remains at atmospheric
pressure.
• Do not exceed the specified maximum ratings for
pressure, temperature, voltage and current.
• Do
not
release
any
refrigerant
atmosphere!
• Before installation or service disconnect all
voltages from system and device.
• Do not operate the valve when the compressor is
not running.
• Do not use any other fluid media without prior
approval of EMERSON. Use of fluids not listed
could result in change of hazard category of
product and consequently change of conformity
assessment
requirement
accordance with European pressure equipment
directive 97/23/EC.
Mounting location/ Mounting direction:
• The valve has to be installed in horizontal position to
vertical position. Motor must not be directed
upwards as in Fig. 1.
• Valves
are
delivered
with
connection configuration and an external tightness of

mbarl/s. If the system piping requires,
flange can be positioned in 4 directions (see Fig. 2).
Use the spare O-ring in packaging if needed and
tighten screws with Allen key acc. table below.

• For best result, locate the valve as close as possible
to the distributor or inlet of evaporator.
• Flow directions: operating conditions (see Fig. 3)

Brazing: (Fig. 4)

• Use the wet rags during brazing when the valve
flange is already mounted.
• To avoid oxidization, it is advised to purge the
system with an inert gas such as nitrogen while
brazing.
• Never braze the valve when the valve is fully in
close position.
Installation:
• Protect the valve against vibration. If the total valve
for
product

weight results in excessive stress to the piping joints,
the valve must be supported by suitable mounting
bracket(s).
• The valves are delivered in half open position for
vacuuming after brazing. Before charging the system
with refrigerant, close the valve in order to prevent
migration of refrigerant to evaporator.

• Check for sufficient refrigerant charge/subcooling
and make sure no flash gas is present at the inlet of
valve before attempting to check valve operation.
Install an EMERSON sight glass AMI or MIA before
the valve.
• The valve must be protected against contaminants.
Install an EMERSON filter drier before the valve.

against moisture and water at any time. It is not
permitted the use of water, steam or any other

Pressure test:

After completion of installation, a pressure test must be
21
carried out as follows:
- according to EN 378 for systems which must comply
with
European
97/23/EC.
Warning:
• Failure to do so could result in loss of refrigerant
and personal injury.
• The pressure test must be conducted by skilled
persons with due respect regarding the danger
related to pressure.
Tightness test:
Conduct a tightness test according to EN 378-2 with
appropriate equipment and method to identify leakages
of external joints. The allowable leakage rate must be
according system manufacturer's specification.
Electrical Connection:
• Entire electrical connections have to comply with
local regulations.
Warning:
• Improper wiring will result wrong direction of
rotation or no rotation of stepper motor.
Wiring and mounting of plug: (Fig. 5).
• Prewired plug and cable assembly (EXV-Mxx) is
ready for connection to the valve. There is no
specific requirement for positioning of plug on pins
1. Push the plug on pins on top of the valve.
2. Rotate the nut one turn in clockwise direction and
push the plug.
3. Repeat this procedure until the plug is tightened.
Wiring to driver/controller:
• See wiring diagram of used driver/controller.
Service / Maintenance:
• For motor check, use an ohmmeter with suitable
range and connect it as shown in Fig. 6.
