Thank you for buying the DVM8928! Your digital sound level meter performs automatic or manual sound level
measurements in 4 different ranges from 40 to 130dB, with a resolution of 0.1dB.
The user can select fast or slow response times and A- and C-weighting. The device is also equipped with a
maximum-hold function, a recording mode for max./min. levels and jacks for an analogue AC output.
2. Measuring Sound Levels
The measured sound levels are displayed both digitally and through a bargraph. The digital display is updated every
160ms, while the bargraph is updated every 40ms.
Press the ON/OFF button to activate the device. The DVM8929 will first display a full screen, followed by"18:8:8".
Next, the device will count down from "99.9" to "00.0". The meter will now start to measure current sound levels and
the "SPL" symbol ("Sound Pressure Level") appears on the left-hand side of the LCD. "A" and "dB" are displayed on
the right-hand side of the screen. Point the microphone upwards in the direction of the sound source to be measured.
3. Selecting the Response Time
The user can select either fast or slow response times to suit different applications and meet with certain standards.
The fast response mode is always installed upon activation of the device. Press the FAST/SLOW button to toggle
between fast and slow response times. The current response time "(FAST" or "SLOW") is displayed in the top right-
hand corner of the LCD.
4. Selecting A- or C-Weighting
The A-weighting mode is always installed upon activation of the device. A-weighting enables the meter to respond in
the same manner as the human ear, which is able to distinguish decreasing and increasing amplitudes at different
frequencies. Applications for A-weighting include ambient noise measurements, workplace design and law-
enforcement.
C-weighting is suitable for flat response measurements. These are measurements of sources of unchanging intensity
and frequency. Applications for C-weighting include the sound level analysis of engines and machinery.
Press the WEIGHTING A/C button to toggle between A- and C-weighting. A small "A" or "C" on the right-hand side of
the screen indicates the current mode.
5. Freezing the Maximum Sound Level Reading ("Max. Hold")
Press ON/OFF to activate the meter. Press the MAX HOLD button during your measurements in order to freeze the
maximum reading on the display. This reading will remain on the display until a higher value is measured. Note that
the bargraph continues to register the current readings : it is not frozen.
Press MAX HOLD again to exit the max-hold mode.
