  • Seite 9: About This Guide

For simplicity, this documentation uses the terms “Switch” (first letter upper case) to refer to both the DES-1218R and DES-1226R Ethernet Switch, and “switch” (first letter lower case) to refer to all Ethernet switches, including the DES-1218R and DES-1226R. When a distinction between the two models is necessary, the model number will be given to distinguish between them.

DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide Rear Panel The rear panel contains the AC power connector. The AC power connector is a standard three- pronged connector that supports the power cord. Plug-in the female connector of the provided power cord into this socket, and the male side of the cord into a power outlet.
  • Seite 21 DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide ♦ 10/100 Mbps On the upper right corner of each twisted pair port, this LED will light when the connection speed is operating at 100 Mbps. An unlit LED indicates a connection speed of 10 Mbps.
  • Seite 22: Connecting The Switch

An end node can be connected to the Switch via a two-pair Category 3, 4, or 5 UTP/STP cable. The end node should be connected to any of the ports (1x - 16x on the DES-1218R or 1x – 24x on the DES- 1226R) of the Switch.

DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide When Auto is chosen, NWay will negotiate three settings: ♦ Speed – 10/100/1000 ♦ Duplex - Full/Half ♦ IEEE 802.3x Flow Control – Enable/Disable Flow Control Toggles flow control Enable or Disable. It is useful during periods of heavy network activity when the Switch’s buffers can receive too much traffic and fill up faster than the Switch can forward the...
  • Seite 27: Vlan Group

DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide Figure 5-2. Example of Priority Queue Assignments VLAN Group Up to 18 (or 26) port-based virtual LAN (VLAN) groups can be designated for the Switch. Individual ports can exist in two or more VLANs simultaneously, so VLAN groups can overlap or intersect. For a more detailed discussion of VLANs, see Chapter 6.
  • Seite 28: Management Concepts

Port trunk groups are used to combine a number of ports together to make a single high-bandwidth data pipeline. The DES-1218R and the DES-1226R can support up to 3 trunk groups. With 2 to 4 ports in each group, a potential bit rate of 800 Mbps can be achieved.

DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide packets in a data stream to arrive in the same order they were sent. A trunk connection can be made with any other switch that maintains host-to-host data streams over a single trunk port.
  • Seite 30: Port-Based Vlans

DES-1218R/DES-1226R 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Switch User’ s Guide Another benefit of VLANs is that you can change the network topology without physically moving stations or changing cable connections. Stations can be ‘moved’ simply by changing VLAN settings from one VLAN (the sales VLAN, for example) to another VLAN (the marketing VLAN). This allows VLANs to accommodate network moves, changes and additions with the utmost flexibility.
