This chapter describes the front panel, rear panel, side panels, optional plug-in modules, and LED
indicators of the Switch.
Front Panel
The front panel of the Switch consists of LED indicators for power and for each port, an RS-232
communication port, 16 (DES-1218R) or 24 (DES-1226R) 10/100 Mbps twisted-pair ports, and a slot
for installing either an optional 2-port Gigabit Ethernet module or a 1- or 2-port 100BASE module.

♦ An RS-232 DCE console port for setting up and managing the Switch via a connection to a
console terminal or PC using a terminal emulation program.
♦ 16 or 24 high-performance, NWay Ethernet ports all of which operate at 10/100 Mbps for
connections to end stations, servers, and hubs. All ports can auto-negotiate between 10Mbps or
100Mbps, full- or half-duplex, and feature flow control.
♦ Slot for an optional 2-port Gigabit Ethernet module or a 1- or 2-port 100BASE-FX module.
