8. E-BIKES
Union also has a number of electric models and below you will find out how to take one
out on the road quickly and safely. This section only deals with the electric part of the bike,
given that the other parts are the same as those on conventional bikes without electric
assistance.
8.1 TURNING THE BIKE ON AND OFF, THE ASSIST AND WALK FUNCTIONS
The bike can be turned on or off in two ways: either on the display (button 10 with the M)
or on the battery with the
- button. This is located on the left rear side of the battery.
There are five assistance levels and your model may have a handy walk-assist function. This
can be turned on by keeping the - button (button 9) depressed for longer.

Installing and removing the battery
To install the battery you first need to unlock the battery lock. You can do that using the
bike lock key provided.
Push the battery as far as it will go over the conductor into the connection on the conduc-
tor and then turn the key. Then remove the key from the battery lock.

To remove the battery, carry out the procedure in reverse. Turn the electric system off first,
before removing the battery.
Charging the battery
First, plug the charger cable into the charger jack on the battery and then plug the charger
into a power socket. As soon as the charger is connected to the power source a red LED
will light up on the charger.
Once charging is finished, the LED on the charger will change from red to green.
There are five LEDs on the battery, which will light up during the charging process; the
fuller the battery, the more LEDs will be illuminated.
Operating radius for your electric bicycle
How far can I cycle on my electric Union? It seems such a simple question, but unfortunate-
ly the question is a bit easier than the answer. There are in fact 10 factors that affect the
operating radius to a greater or lesser extent. These include logical things like whether or
not you are cycling into the wind, uphill or downhill and, of course, the assistance level you
are using. Other things like tyre pressure, gears, temperature, amount of luggage and, of
course, body weight, determine how far you can get.
Here is a tip for you: always set off in a low gear – it makes a huge difference! Your dealer
can give you the best advice on which battery is the best for you.
Other things about the electric bike
• Always turn off the battery or remove it if work is being done on the bike.
• Remove the bicycle battery if your bike is being transported by car
• Caution: hot or cold weather can seriously affect the efficiency of the battery.
• Always charge the battery in a dry place where the temperature is between 15 and
30 degrees. The ideal charging temperature is around 20 degrees.
• Only charge the battery using the original charger that was supplied with your bike
