Nach nur achtmonatiger Bauzeit wurde diese grundlegend
neue Lokomotive im Juli 1935 in Dienst gestellt. Damit
war die V 16 (V 140) die erste Groß-Diesellokomotive mit
hydraulischer Kraftübertragung. Krauss-Maffei sowie das
Reichsbahn-Zentralamt in München und die Firmen BBC,
MAN und Voith waren an der Entwicklung und dem Bau die-
ser Maschine beteiligt. Der Dieselmotor entwickelte bei 700
U/min eine Leistung von 1.400 PS. Das Voith-Flüssigkeitsge-
triebe mit einem Drehmomentwandler und zwei Kupplungen
übertrug diese Leistung auf die Blindwelle.
Bis 1953 wurde die Lokomotive im Raum Frankfurt einge-
setzt; seit 1970 befindet sie sich im Deutschen Museum in
München.

Information about the Prototype

This was a basically new locomotive and was placed into
service in July of 1935 after just an eight month building
period. The V 16 (V 140) was the first large diesel lokomotive
with hydraulic power transmission. Krauss-Maffei, the Ger-
man State Railroad Central Office in Munich and the firms of
BBC, MAN and Voith all participated in the development and
production of this locomotive. The diesel motor developed
1,400 horsepower at 700rpm. The Voith fluid transmission
with a torque converter and two couplings transmitted this
power to the jackshaft.
This locomotive was used until 1953 in the Frankfurt area;
since 1970 it has been in the German Museum in Munich.
