8.1 Measuring range [ppm]

The high sensitivity of the SelectH
2
EN
tector makes it possible to detect traces of
gases in the ppm range. For example, 1 ppm
is the quantity of 1cm3 gas in one m3 of air.
The Herth+Buss SelectH
gas detector uses
2
this dimension to measure up to 999 ppm.
In the transition to 1000 ppm, the display
switches to the vol% range and changes to
0.1 vol% (see the comparison values in the
following table).

8.2 Detecting leaks

As described in 8.3, the quantity of gas leak-
ing determines the spread width. However,
as the spread range is unknown, every con-
nection in the accessible parts of the pipe
must be examined carefully. If the device's
sensor head now gets in the "gas cloud" , the
light gas in the sensor head diffuses and has
an effect on the gas-sensitive semiconduc-
tor. Depending on the strength of the gas
concentration, the measuring procedure will
require approx. 2-3 seconds. For the testing
practice, this means:

Briefly coming close to the screw connection
gas de-
or the fitting with hemp thread is not enough
to detect small gas leaks.
8.3 "Feeling around" the pipe
using the SelectH
2
Slow "feeling around" the connection points
has proven successful in practice. This is the
best way to detect the small bubble of gas
escaping.
Operating Instruction

9. Brief instructions

Important notice: The detailed operating in-
structions must always be observed for all
details, e.g. light or signal ON/OFF , calibra-
tions or charging the device.
Switching on by pressing this button (only in
a gas-free atmosphere). After switching on,
the LCD display flashes H2 and HEAt alter-
nately for the duration of the approx. 50 sec-
ond long heat-up phase. The analogue bar at
the lower edge of the display builds up from
left to right.
The display shows 0 ppm after the heat-up
phase is completed. Measurements can now
be made.
20
21
When a concentration is measured, the dis-
play first increases to 999 ppm and when it
reaches 0.1% it switches to the vol% measur-
ing range. The LEL message occurs at over
4.0 vol%. This is reinforced by a continu-
ous tone. The display and signal cannot be
stopped, even by switching to "clean air" .
The device should be switched off in a gas-
free atmosphere.
WARNING
A gas report with LEL and a continu-
ous tone may indicate an explosive
gas-air mixture.
To switch off: Press and hold the ON/OFF
button for 2 seconds.
