Quickstart
Light barrier amplifier
ISM-8800
QS080701DE/EN
Warning!
The light barrier amplifiers ISM-... are not safety systems and
should not be used as such systems. The devices are not to be
used for applications where personal safety is dependent on
their function.
The operator of the higher-level overall system, e.g. a machine
installation, is responsible for complying with the national and
international safety and accident prevention regulations which
apply to the specific use.
The installation and electrical connection of the light barrier
amplifier by qualified personnel is recommended according to
applicable regulations in a zero-voltage and switched off ma-
chine. The machine must be secured against restart.
1
Choose the sensor heads
The light barrier amplifiers are to be used for the detection of objects in machines
or production systems. They form, in conjunction with one infrared transmitter
and receiver (not included), a powerful light barrier. Select one transmitter and
one receiver for each channel depending on the application. This includes
choosing the sensor heads, body style and cable length or quick disconnect that
meets your requirements.
2
Mounting
The light barrier amplifier mounts on a top DIN rail NS35/7,5 or NS35/15
according to EN 60715. The ambient temperature must not fall below 0 °C and
exceed 50 °C. Devices, which send out harmful temperatures, must be placed
at a distance of at least 20 mm away. The amplifier must be protected against
humidity and contarmination. For electrical connections you must observe a
distance of at least 15 mm to other parts.
3
Electrical connection
Before connecting the amplifer, please check whether the supply voltage is switched off.

Starting up
Make sure that the higher-level overall system is not in operation before the light
barrier amplifier is correctly adjusted and checked.
a) Before switching on the light barrier amplifer, check...
- the supply voltage.
- the connection.
- that no object is located between the transmitter and receiver.
b) Start up the light barrier amplifier
- Switch on the supply voltage. The light barrier ampli-
fier performs a self test.
- Look at the text of the upper row of the display.
The text "ISM-8800" is displayed.
- The amplifier is correctly connected. Go to point 6.
The text "SENSOR FAILURE" is displayed.
- Look on the channel status display which LED lights
red.
On this channel, the sensor heads are not connected. The amplifier is
correctly connected. Go to point 6.
On this channel, the sensor heads are correctly connected. The
amplifier is incorrectly connected. Check the installation. Full
information will be found in the ISM-8800 user manual.

Light barrier adjustment
To guarantee the regular operation of the light barrier amplifier, each light
barrier channel must be adjusted to the ambient conditions.

c) Choose the operation mode
The operation mode determines the method of the adjustment from the trans-
mit power to the ambient conditions. Selectable are:
Channel off
- The transmit power is switched off. You must switch off all
channels without sensor heads.
Manual operation
- The transmit power will be adjusted manually to the
ambient conditions by the user.
Automatic operation - The transmit power will be adjusted automatically
depending on the ambient conditions.

- The adjustments for this channel are finished. Please
go to point 6g.
Manual operation
The basic transmit level and the transmit power are adjustable. The basic trans-
mit level is a default value for the maximum transmit power. Selectable are:
Hi - full power, maximum range.
Lo - reduced power, short range. Improve the adjustability of the maxi-
mum sensitivity by short distances between transmitter and receiver.
The transmit power can be adjusted between 0 and 10. Increase the transmit
power from zero until the system status display lights constantly green. The
channel is adjusted to the maximum sensitivity (low contamination reserve).
Should the contamination reserve increase, the transmit power level must
also be increased.
1 Choose the manual operation.

Automatic operation
The basic transmit level is adjustable. This is a preset parameter for the trans-
mit power adjustment and switching sensitivity. The amplifier adjusts at:
L1 - to the optimal transmit power level, high switching sensitivity.
L2 - to the optimal transmit power level, low switching sensitivity.
H1 - to at least 50 % of the max. transmit power level, low switching sensitivity.
H2 - to at least 95% of the max. transmit power level, low switching sensitivity.

d) Choose the switching behaviour
The switching behaviour describes the behaviour of the switching output when
the beam of the light barrier is interrupted or cleared. The relay contact is clo-
sed in light mode when light is on the receiver and in dark mode when no light
is on the receiver.
