Lead battery plug-in charger
600 mA
Item-No. 20 01 88

Intended use

The device is intended to be used to automatically charge and buffer lead batteries
with 2, 6 and 12 V terminal voltage. The battery voltage is set manually by a sliding
switch. Possible battery types are lead-gel, lead-fleece or lead-acid batteries.
The I-U charge principle initially charges the lead battery with constant current of 600
mA (0.6A) until the charging end voltage for the relevant battery is reached. The
charger identifies this, switches over to constant current and adjusts down the charg-
ing current (trickle charge function). Consequently the battery voltage is always kept
at an optimal level. The battery can therefore be connected to the charger for a longer
period of time. This is also ideally convenient for „hibernation". LEDs on the charger
provide constant information about the current operating state.
The plug-in charger is overload-proof and short-circuit-proof (<1min.). Pay attention
to the polarity! A protective circuit avoids charging with a reversed polarity, which
might destroy the battery and the charger. A reversed polarity is indicated by a red
signal.
The connection is made through coloured battery clips. Because of a safety switching
the battery clips do not carry voltage as long as they are not connected to a battery.
Primary batteries (zinc-carbon, alkaline, etc.) or other types of battery such as lead
batteries are not to be connected and recharged.
The charger is only to be connected to 230 V AC voltage used in the average house-
hold and to be used in well ventilated, dry inside rooms.
Use, other than described above, is not permitted and can damage the product.
Moreover, this can cause a hazard e.g. short-circuit, fire, electric shock, etc.
The safety instructions must be followed unconditionally!

Safety instructions

Please read the entire operating instructions before using the product
for the first time; they contain important information on the correct
operation.
The guarantee is rendered invalid when damage is incurred as a
result of non-compliance with the operating instructions! We do not
assume any liability for resulting damage!
We will also not assume any responsibility for damage to assets or for
personal injury caused by improper handling or failure to observe the
safety instructions. The warranty is voided in these cases.
Due to safety and license reasons it is not permitted to make alterations and/or
changes to the electric appliances on own authority.
To ensure safe operation, the user should comply with the safety instructions and
warnings contained in these operating instructions.
The structure complies with safety class II (double and strengthened insulating).
Make sure the insulation of the housing is neither damaged nor destroyed.
Chargers and accessories should be kept away from children! It is not a toy.
On industrial sites the accident prevention regulations of the association of the indus-
trial workers' society for electrical equipment and utilities must be followed.
In schools, training facilities, hobby and self-help workshops operating chargers and
the accessories should be supervised by qualified trained staff.
Avoid use under unfavorable ambient conditions. This damages the sensitive elec-
tricity in the inside of the charger and thereby possibly leads to danger to life of the
user. Adverse ambient conditions are:
- Excessively high humidity (> 80 % rel., condensation)
- Moisture
- Dust and flammable gases, vapors or solvent, petrol
- Excessively high ambient temperature (> ca. +50°C)
- Strong vibrations
Pay attention to the charging instructions of the respective battery manu-
facturer when charging.
When used incorrectly (i.e. wrong type of battery or with incorrect polarity), the battery

can be overcharged or destroyed. In the worst case the charger can explode and
thereby cause considerable damage.
Keep transmitting devices (mobile telephone, transmitting systems for model making
Version 07/07
etc.) away from chargers as the transmitter signal could interfere with charging and
°
possibly break the charger and thus the battery.
Never connect the charger to the mains voltage immediately after taking it from a cold
room into a warm room. The condensation which forms can damage the device. Allow
the device to reach room temperature while not connected.
Do not store lead batteries in the proximity of heat sources or places with naked flame.
Insulate its contacts by using an insulating tape and ensure a dry and cold environ-
ment. Storage temperature max. 40°C.
If you have a reason to believe that the device can no longer be operated safely, dis-
connect it immediately and secure it against being operated unintentionally.
It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if:
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the unit no longer operates and
- the unit was stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- if it has been subjected to considerable stress in transit.

Initial operation

Charging
• Insert the mains plug into a mains socket (230 V~).
• Use the slide switch on the charger to select the cell voltage appropriate for your
lead battery (2V/6V or 12V).
• Connect the battery with the right polarity. Red battery clip to the plus pole, black
battery clip to the minus pole. The green charge indication „charging" flashes.
Charging starts automatically.
• On the other hand, when the red indication „Pol." flashes, immediately check the
polarity of the battery clips and change these.
Charging switch-off
The charger has a charging switch-off which automatically completes the charging
process when the charging end voltage is reached and switches to trickle charge
mode.
The green charge indicator extinguishes in the trickle charge mode.
A triangle containing an exclamation mark indicates important information
in these operating instructions which is to be observed without fail.
The "hand" symbol indicates special information and advice on operation
of the device.
Since the device generates heat when operating, ensure that it is ade-
quately ventilated. The housing must not be covered!
Never charge lead batteries in a closed box.
Ensure sufficient ventilation during the charging process and avoid
naked flame! Explosive gases can be generated during the charging
process. Keep it out of the reach of children!
Before charging batteries with liquid acid, open the inspection plugs
of the single cells. Leave the battery housing to ventilate for approx. 2
minutes for explosive gasses to volatilise!
Check the liquid level and refill if necessary. Also check the liquid lev-
el on a regular basis during longer charging periods (hibernation).
Use safety glasses!
Do not tip over lead-acid batteries. Avoid any contact with the battery liq-
uid, as this causes severe chemical burns. Rinse off the contact points
(skin, clothes, etc.) immediately with ample water, to dilute the battery
acid. Contact a doctor immediately in case of contact with skin.
If you do not use lead-acid batteries for a longer period of time,
recharge them approximately every 3 months to avoid their total dis-
charge.
Never short-circuit the battery contacts.
When connecting batteries, always observe the charging instructions
of the relevant battery manufacturer.
Pull the mains plug out of the mains socket first and only then remove the
battery from the charger.
This avoids spark formation and the possible damage of the contacts.
Avoid short-circuit when unplugging.
While charging it is perfectly normal for the battery to become „slightly"
warm.
Never cover the charger to avoid possible damage (caused by heat
accumulation).
