Ambient Air Meter CO-50
Item-No. 10 13 15
Intended Use
The CO-50 is a stationary measuring instrument for measuring the carbon dioxide concentration (CO
ambient air, using an exact and long-term stable NDIR method of measuring (non-dispersive infrared
absorption measurement). The meter is intended for monitoring the carbon dioxide level in the room air in order
to take appropriate early measures for ventilation. Increased CO
and loss of efficiency and performance.
Two critical load values for carbon dioxide can be set individually by the user. Exceeding the values triggers
an audible alarm. In addition, the quality level is displayed by means of a traffic light indicator
(green/yellow/red).
The air temperature and humidity are measured at the same time. All three values are indicated on the dis-
play at the same time. The measurement interval is approx. 5 seconds. In this way, current, updated values
are ascertained at all times.
The internal sensor is compensated for altitude and temperature, so exact values can be measured even at
different geographical altitudes and temperatures. The temperature compensation is performed automatically,
the operating altitude must be set manually.
A data logger records the values measured during the last 24 hrs at an interval of 30 minutes. The MAX/MIN
values can also be selected and displayed.
To operate the device, a wall plug transformer is required that is enclosed. The voltage supply ranges from
100 - 240 V/AC for the public grid.
Measurements must not be carried out under unfavourable ambient conditions.
Unfavourable ambient conditions are:
- Wet conditions or high air humidity,
- Dust and flammable gases, vapours or solvent.
Any use other than described above is not permitted and can damage the product. No part of the product
may be modified or rebuilt! The safety instructions are to be observed without fail!

Carbon dioxide is a transparent and odourless gas. Pay attention to your own safety during all
measurements. To protect the life of humans and animals, this device must not be used in areas where high
concentrations of carbon dioxide are used industrially.
Measurement instruments used at schools, training facilities, do-it-yourself and hobby workshops should not
be handled unless supervised by trained, responsible personnel.
Do not switch the measuring instrument on immediately after it has been taken from a cold in to a warm
environment. The condensation that forms might destroy your device. Allow the device to reach room tem-
perature before switching it on.
Do not leave packing materials unattended. It could be a dangerous plaything for children.
Do not use the meter in explosive areas or areas with were high concentrations of carbon dioxide are used.
Do not expose the device to extreme temperatures, strong vibrations or high humidity. The correct operation
of the display is only guaranteed in the temperature range 0°C to +50°C.
Never touch the wall plug transformer with wet or damp hands. There is risk of fatal electric shock.
Do not pull the wall plug transformer from the socket by pulling on the cable. Always hold the power adaptor
by the housing.
The housing must not be opened or disassembled.

Setting up the Device
Place the meter so that sufficient ambient air can flow through it. The air flow for the measurement enters the
device at the back (4). Avoid narrow spaces, for example between books etc. in order to prevent any effects
on the measured results. Moreover, make sure the device cannot fall accidentally.
Choose a place where a mains socket is available close by.
Getting Started and Operation
Connecting the power adaptor
The meter only operates with the wall plug transformer enclosed. Connect the low-voltage plug from the
power adaptor to the socket (5) on the rear of the meter, an audible click should be heard. The plug must lie
flat against the meter.
Connect the wall plug transformer to a socket connected to the national grid.
If everything is connected correctly, the measurement readout and the message „WARM UP" are shown on
the display.
Warm up phase „WARM UP"
After initial start-up the device is always in the warm-up phase. At an ambient temperature of 22°C, the warm-
up phase takes <60 s. Please wait until the text „WARM UP" disappears from the display. The meter is then
ready for use.
Basic setting for the operating altitude
The carbon dioxide value depends on the operating altitude (variation in air pressure). The adjustment in
made as the altitude difference with respect to sea level (NN). The operating altitude must be set on the
device. On delivery, the default setting for the altitude is 0 m. To set the value to the altitude at your geo-
graphic location, proceed as follows:
- Press the „Mode" key 2x, or as often as required, until the symbol „ALTI" flashes.
- Confirm this by pressing the „Enter" button. On the lower left display, the current altitude is shown in
metres. The meter indicator „m" flashes. The „Mode" button switches between the units (m/ft).
- Select the altitude that is closest to your location, by using the „Up" and „Down" keys. Round the altitude
up or down to the nearest hundred-value.
- Confirm your input with the „Enter" button. The meter is operational and displays the value for carbon
dioxide and the temperature.
Measuring carbon dioxide levels, temperature and relative humidity
After setting the operational altitude, the meter is in the automatic measurement mode. The carbon dioxide
level is displayed in the upper half of the display, the temperature is shown in the lower half on the left, and
the relative humidity is shown in the lower half on the right.
The measurement interval is approx. 5 seconds and it is indicated by the fan symbol in the display. A
measurement always takes two fan cycles.
However, the meter needs more time to deliver exact values. This is also dependent on the air flow in the
room.
The carbon dioxide value can be read after about 2 minutes, the temperature and humidity values stabilize
after approx. 20 - 30 minutes.
Setting the carbon dioxide alarm limit
The meter enables individual values to be set for the carbon dioxide alarm values, in two steps. The alarm
light indicator changes if these values are exceeded: Green = no alarm, Yellow = alarm limit 1 exceeded, Red
= alarm limit 2 exceeded. The pre-programmed values are: Alarm 1 = >800 ppm, Alarm 2 = >1200 ppm (parts
per million) and corresponds to the normal, common limit values for office workplaces. If the alarm function
is activated, an alarm will sound if alarm limit 2 is exceeded.
Please proceed as follows, to change the alarm values:
- Press the „Mode" button repeatedly, until „ALARM 1" or „ALARM 2" flashes.
- Confirm this by pressing the „Enter" button. The display shows the current limit value in ppm.
- Select the desired limit value using the „Up" and „Down" buttons. The setting is made in intervals of 50 ppm
or 100 ppm from 1000 ppm on. The „Up" key increases the value, the „Down" key decreases the value.
- Confirm your input with the „Enter" button. The meter switches back to the normal measurement mode.
Switching the audible carbon dioxide alarm on and off
On delivery, the alarm is activated by default and it is indicated by the loudspeaker symbol on the display. If
the alarm limit 2 (red light indicator) is exceeded, the audible alarm is triggered.
Please proceed as follows, to turn the alarm on or off:
- Press the „Mode" key 1x, or as many as required, until the symbol „MUTE" flashes.
- Confirm this by pressing the „Enter" button. The silent alarm condition is displayed (on = enabled (signal is
off), oFF = disabled (signal is on)).
- Select the desired status, using the „Up" and „Down" buttons. Each keystroke changes the status.
- Confirm your input with the „Enter" button. The meter switches back to the normal measurement mode.
- The loudspeaker symbol is displayed when the signal is enabled, and crossed out if the signal is disabled.
- If the alarm value 2 is exceeded during the reading, the red alarm display is lit and an alarm tone is emitted
at intervals of 5 s. The alarm sound remains active until the value has normalised (by ventilation, etc.) or
the alarm is deactivated manually.
Setting the carbon dioxide standard value for the outside
The carbon dioxide standard value is required as a reference in order to calculate the ventilation rate (VENT
RATE). The value of 400 ppm, valid in general, is preset as the reference value .
Please proceed as follows, to change the standard value:
- Press the „Mode" key 5x, or as often as required until the symbol „OUTSIDE" flashes.
- Confirm this by pressing the „Enter" button. The display shows the current standard value in ppm.
- Select the desired value, using the „Up" and „Down" buttons. The adjustment is made in steps of 10 ppm.
The „Up" key increases the value, the „Down" key decreases the value.
- Confirm your input with the „Enter" button. The meter switches back to the normal measurement mode.
