Explanation of symbols

The symbol with the lightning in the triangle indicates that there is a risk to your
health, e.g. due to an electric shock.
This symbol is used to highlight important information in these operating instructions.
Always read this information carefully.
This symbol indicates special information and advice on how to use the product.

Safety instructions

Read the operating instructions carefully and especially observe the safety
information. If you do not follow the safety instructions and information on
proper handling in this manual, we will assume no liability for any resulting
personal injury or damage to property. Such cases will invalidate the warranty/
guarantee.
• The product is not a toy. Keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
• Do not leave packaging material lying around carelessly. This may become
dangerous playing material for children.
• Protect the product from extreme temperatures, direct sunlight, strong jolts, high
humidity, moisture, flammable gases, vapours and solvents.
• Do not place the product under any mechanical stress.
• If it is no longer possible to operate the product safely, stop using it and prevent
unauthorized use. Safe operation can no longer be guaranteed if the product:
- is visibly damaged,
- is no longer working properly,
- has been stored for extended periods in poor ambient conditions or
- has been subjected to any serious transport-related stresses.
• Always handle the product carefully. Jolts, impacts or a fall even from a low height
may damage the product.
• Always observe the safety and operating instructions of any other devices which
are connected to the product.
• Do not place the product in the proximity of speakers or machines that radiate a
strong magnetic field.
• Only touch the casing on the sides of the SSD or hard drive; do not touch the
circuit board. Electrostatic discharge can destroy the SSD or hard drive.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cable is not pinched, kinked or
damaged by sharp edges.
• Never use the product immediately after it has been brought from a cold room into
a warm one. The condensation generated could destroy the product. Allow the
product to reach room temperature before connecting it and putting it to use. This
may take several hours.
• Never pour any liquids over electrical devices or place objects filled with liquid next
to or on the product.
• Do not place the product in the direct proximity of heat sources (e.g. heater, stove,
oven, amplifier).
• Use suitable padding to protect the surfaces of valuable furniture against
scratches and dents.
• Consult a technician if you are not sure how to use or connect the product.
• Maintenance, modifications and repairs are to be performed exclusively by an
expert or at a qualified shop.
• If you have questions which remain unanswered by these operating instructions,
contact our technical support service or other technical personnel.
• The following notice applies only to the use of a conventional hard drive
with magnetic disk.
Never move the product with an installed hard disk drive when the latter is in
operation. Doing so may make the read/write heads on the hard disk drive touch
the magnetic disk. This may lead to data loss and damage the hard disk drive.
Turn the product off and wait at least 30 seconds (until the magnetic disks in the
hard disk drive have stopped rotating) before you move the product.
All of the following descriptions about hard drives also apply to SSD drives.
Installing a hard drive
• Slide the latch button on the bottom in the direction of the arrow to open the storage
compartment. Remove the cable from the storage compartment. Close the storage
compartment.
• Place the product on a flat, stable surface free of vibrations.
• On one side of the rubber cover is a triangular arrow. Lift this side slightly and turn the rubber
cover 180° sideways.
• Connect a SATA hard disk drive with the appropriate terminal block. Please pay attention to
the correct alignment. Do not use any force.
• As soon as the hard drive is installed, the top housing part slides up automatically. This
reveals the USB port on the side of the housing.
Connection
• Turn on the computer. Wait until the operating system is completely booted up.
• Connect the product with the included USB cable to your computer.
The product requires a current of 900 mA for proper operation. A USB 3.0 port
usually supplies 900 mA.
USB 2.0 ports usually supply only 500 mA and are not sufficient for operation of the
product. For operation via USB 2.0, an optional Y cable is required to connect the
product to two USB ports.
Some notebooks supply less than 900 mA per USB port. In this case, it is possible
that the hard drive may not start or be recognised. Use a USB hub with its own
mains adapter to ensure an adequate current supply should this be the case.
• The operating system automatically recognises the product upon first use and installs the
necessary drivers. The drivers are already included in your operating system.
A new hard drive has to be firstly partitioned and formatted before the drive is
displayed in Explorer and can be used; see the next section.
