Information on the original:
In an endeavour to considerably increase the speed of express trains, the Borsig Locomotive Works of the Ger-
man Imperial Railways commissioned the construction of streamlined steam locomotives which, for the first
time, were intended to hit the extra high travelling speeds of
175 km/h and greater. In order to ensure a safe observation of the track and signals in the process, a front cabin
was required. The locomotive had to therefore travel in the main direction of travel backwards, i.e. with the outer
firebox travelling ahead and the tender having to follow behind the smoke box. On account of the distance be-
tween the tender and the firebox hard coal could not be used. The choice fell between oil and coal dust, the dif-
ficulty of obtaining oil discounting the former. Hard coal dust could be obtained from the many mines in the
Ruhr region. The coal dust had to be transported over 14 m from the tender and blown into the firebox. On
22nd July 1937 the streamline clad 05 003 was presented to the public at the Borsig's century celebrations.
Lengthy and disappointing test rides followed, in which enormous technical difficulties, including the transport
and the insufficient combustion of the coal dust were encountered. This led to the locomotive, delayed by 2nd
world war, to be returned to its original non-clad form with the chimney forwards and lump coal firing.
The clad BR 05 003 was not yet approved by the BR as a test locomotive and therefore, as on the original,
some markings are missing on the model, such as, for example, home station, weight and brake test.

Schematic representation of the original
During the Reichsbahn period the standard head light consisted of two lights. The third light – as on the BR 05
003 on locomotive and tender – provided information for the rail personnel and meant "a special train is coming
from the opposite direction". This is its description as signal No. 18 in the signal book from 1st August 1907 /
edition 1920 and as signal ZG7 in the signal book valid from 1st April 1935.
Correspondingly, the top head light of locomotive and tender can be switched on or off on the model (see func-
tion on tender).
