a victim has the best chance of being rescued if the largest possible
number of companions in a given group have not been buried and
work efficiently as a team to search and rescue their companion. In
the event of an accident, the most important considerations are to:
STaY CaLM, be obSerVeaNT, and raISe THe aLarM.
(1) Determine the search area and last point seen:
How many victims are buried? Are there several companions
ready to engage in rescue? The most experienced person
takes over assignment and management.
(2) Call emergency services:
Dial 112 (EU) if this is possible without losing time.
(3) establish search areas:
Where are the probable burial locations?
(4) Visual Sweep Search:
Search for the avalanche cone with your eyes and ears.
(5) Search with avalanche transceiver: Switch non-
searching avalanche transceivers in SEARCH-mode. The search
is divided in the following search phases (ICAR 2009):
A Signal search, b Coarse search, C Fine search, D Pinpointing
(Check the search results with a probe. Leave probe in place.)

(6) Dig: Start digging at a distance
downhill from the probe equal to
the indicated depth of burial.
Dig over a large area.
(7) Rescue and first aid: First clear the face and airways.
Watch out for any breathing cavity (air pocket) for the victim.
Protect from cold.

SoLUTIon WITH
THe PIePS SAFeTY
SYSTeM:
Situation: 2 burials having transceivers with pIepS iprobe-Sup-
port (pIepS DSp pro / DSp SporT / VeCTor / DSp / DSp Tour /
freerIDe). Two rescuers are equipped with the pIepS safety sy-
stem: rescuer a with DSp SporT, electronic probe iprobe oNe,
shovel pro. rescuer b with freerIDe, electronic probe iprobe
oNe, shovel pro.
The two rescuers organize themselves (see "IN CASE OF AN EMER-
GENCY") and start searching using the given search strip with.
(1) Rescuer A is the first who gets a signal and follows the direction
indication to victim A.
(2)
Rescuer B is unpacking his shovel PIEPS PRO and his electronic
PIEPS iPROBE ONE from the safety gear compartment of his back-
pack PIEPS MYOTIS, gets ready to work and hurries to rescuer A.

After successfully pinpointing with his 3-antenna transceiver PIEPS
DSP SPORT (only one maximum) rescuer A starts grid-shaped pro-
bing with the electronic PIEPS iPROBE ONE. The permanent acou-
stic signal of the iPROBE ONE and the LED-signal indication vali-
dates the probe hit (< 50cm). Automatically the transmitter (with
iPROBE ONE support) of the victim A is deactivated.
(4) Automatically the PIEPS DSP SPORT from rescuer A is guiding him
directly to the next buried victim. Now the display shows "only
1 victim".

While rescuer A is taking the probe from rescuer B, following the
direction indication of his PIEPS DSP SPORT guiding to the next
victim B, rescuer B starts to dig and recover victim A.

Rescuer A now is hurrying to victim B. After pinpointing he is pro-
bing again until he has found the victim. The PIEPS iPROBE ONE
again validates the hitting of the victim. He immediately starts to
dig out and to recover the victim.
Fastest possible reception of a first signal due to the all-around range
of the PIEPS DSP SPORT – most accurate pinpointing due to the 3
antenna system from PIEPS, validation of a target hit while probing
using the PIEPS iPROBE ONE – indication of the next strongest signal
on the PIEPS DSP SPORT – efficient and easy shovelling using shovel
PIEPS PRO.
