Mars® Flyer
More Tall Tales
of the Prototype
A great mechanic was once inspi-
red by a beautiful old propeller to
build a propeller-driven railcar.
After weeks of work, the Fortuna
Flyer emerged from his works-
hop, and on a beautiful summer
day, he thrilled the citizens of his
small town with the first excursion
in his experimental craft:
The mechanic roared down the
track. He was pleased, for a
moment, but soon, he was struck
by the fearsome sight of a big
oncoming curve. He thought to
just lift off the gas, but before the
thought could be acted upon, he
was in the curve.
The machine shuddered, lifting its
inside wheels, but stayed on the
rails for the entire radius. Still, he
trembled a bit at the danger he
had faced. As the machine slo-
wed, he pulled on the gearshift
lever, making the propeller revol-
ve the other way around. The
white-faced mechanic and his
machine came slowly to a stop,
sat for a moment, then rolled
backwards into the station again.
The cheering of the crowd was
indescribable.
The crowd, however, did not know
that the mechanic already had
greater plans. He had found new
inspiration in the fantastic voyage
of the American "Pathfinder" spa-
cecraft. Through the eyes of its
German camera, Pathfinder had
shown mankind a new world, and
the mechanic knew that his new
vehicle had to be just as ambi-
tious and just as ingenious.
So secretly, the mechanic began
building
a
machine, a railcar called the Mars
Flyer. With a sleek body, it would
cheat the wind. With aerodynamic
aids, it could hug the rails. With
laser boosters, it would, he
hoped, go where no man had
ever gone before.
In the dark of night, he quietly rol-
led his new machine into the sta-
second
propeller
tion, and at dawn, the townsfolk
were stunned to see the space-
age ship.
As the crowd gathered, the
mechanic donned his pressurized
suit, entered the capsule and clo-
sed the hatch. Quickly, he activa-
ted the plasma starter and bro-
ught the turbo motor to life. As
with the Fortuna, there was a
short pause, but then, a flash!
The railcar rocketed down the
rails at an incredible rate, and the
dreaded curve arrived almost
instantly. The crowd gasped. They
knew that, even with all the
mechanic's improvements, the
new machine could not stay on
the rails at that speed.
And it didn't. But there was no
crash, no wreckage. Some said
the machine simply disintegrated.
Some said it disappeared in the
dense morning fog. The mecha-
nic, however, knew where he was,
and soon, he turned the antenna
on top of his craft towards Earth
to broadcast the story of his jour-
ney to Mars.
