Duct smoke detector – RMK

2.1 Area of application

The duct smoke detector RMK (with VdS approval) is used for the early detection of
combustion gas/smoke in a ventilation system. The duct smoke detector protects
against smoke intake by monitoring the supply air intake and it allows targeted system
deactivation to prevent smoke entry.
Application as a component of a fire alarm system is not intended!
The duct smoke detector is designed for use inside buildings.
2.2 Function
During operation, the smoke detector in connection with the ventilation duct base is
permanently flushed with the air flow in the monitored ventilation ducting. When smoke
particles are detected (smoke detection in the scattered light principle), an alarm is trigge-
red and held (self-holding alarm). The safety devices are triggered. Resetting takes place
when the duct is free of smoke by briefly interrupting the supply voltage.
Procedure for resetting:
1. Remove the triggered smoke detector.
2. Blow out the detection chamber.
3. Screw in the smoke detector
4. Reset the system.
The smoke detector states are quick and easy to ascertain through the transparent ca-
sing cover of the duct smoke detector.

2.3 General features

The duct smoke detector consists of an optical smoke detector with a specially develo-
ped, automatic alarm threshold as contamination compensation for a long service life, an
aluminium inlet pipe and a ventilation duct base with vibration decoupling (Fig.1).

2.4 Project planning

The duct smoke detector is designed for use inside buildings in rectangular ventilation
ducts from 0.15 to 1 m. In case of round ducts, the use of Ø 0.2 to 1 m is possible. The
side detection area of the inlet pipe in the duct is approx. 500 mm.
The ventilation duct base must be placed so that safe smoke detection can be assumed.
Disruptive factors which affect the safe functioning of the duct smoke detector must be
excluded. (Recommendation for project planning, see Fig. 3)
In order to guarantee smoke detection in larger ducts, multiple duct smoke detectors must
be provided. In this respect, the parameters of the ventilation ducting must be taken into
account.
