MEMBER O FASMALL F AMILY A shortcoming of theGerman
war machinein WorldWar II was its lack of a powerfulsurfacenavy. However,
the small numberof majorvesselsthat composed the German surfacefleet were
inferior to none.Amongthesewas the heavycruiserPrinzEugen, oneof the few
large Germanships to survivethe war. She enteredservicein August,1940,
taking her training cruisesin the Baltic Sea.Herfirst combatvoyagebeganMay

1941,whenshe accompanied the superdreadnaught Bismarckon her fateful
journey into the Atlantic.
BRITAIN'S HOODA VICTIM OF PRINZ EUGEN'S GUNSAs the two Germanwar-
ships steamedthrough the Denmark Straits between Greenland and Icelandthey
wereinterceptedby two British cruisers. T hese weresoonjoinedby the battleship
e
Princ
of Walesand the cruiserHood. In the ensuingbattle the heavyarmament
of Prinz Eugen proved its worth as a well placed salvo of 8 inch shells shattered
Hood. A second round from Bismarck, minutes later, completedthe destruction of
the
British
cruiser.
For a briet periodfollowingthe loss of the British ship the Germans evaded their
enemies
.
In spite of very poorweather,a determined British forceof planesand
ships relocatedthe fleeing Germansand attacked again. Bismarck, suffering
some damage from the previous assault, was forced to counterattack, and her
captain orderedthe Prinz to retreat southwardto France. The hugeGermanbattle-
ship then faced alone the superior British forces that finally bestedand sank the
famous
Bismarck.
