HISTORY
More than 130 years ago, in 1889,
budding Swiss watchmaking
entrepreneur Georges Ducommun
founded the "Georges Ducommun,
Fabrique des montres DOXA" company
in Le Locle. The future is promising in
the cradle of Swiss watchmaking.
Success breeds success, word gets
around, and in 1906, an anti-magnetic
DOXA pocket watch wins the gold
medal at the Milan fair in Italy. Already
known for its timepieces of "top quality
at a reasonable price," DOXA also gains
a solid reputation as an innovator.
The "8-DAY DOXA Caliber" patented in
1907 and designed for the dashboard
becomes standard equipment on the
first Bugatti and Mercedes automobiles.
By 1915, the company employs several
hundred watchmakers and engineers.
While concentrating on timepieces for
travel and sporting applications, DOXA
continues to develop watches for every
type of customer. Innovations include
a day-date complication with a separate
hand to indicate the day of the month
and a jumping seconds hand. In 1957,
the brand unveils an instant classic:
the Bauhaus-inspired "Grafic" Collection.
Coinciding with the company's
75
anniversary, DOXA is awarded
th
the 1
Prize at the Swiss National
st
Exhibition in Lausanne in 1964.
At that time, the space race is on.
Yet, as the world looks up at the stars
above, another universe beckons below:
the deep blue sea. Diving watches have

been around for quite a while, but for all
intents and purposes, they are mostly
worn by military and professional divers.
And they're expensive.
In 1967, DOXA launches the SUB
concept: the first truly purpose-de-
signed, professional-grade diver's watch
available to the general public. With
radical innovations, it is the first diver's
watch to feature a unidirectional
rotating bezel to monitor dive time and
ensure a safe no-decompression ascent
back to the surface. The other reason
why the SUB becomes an easily
recognizable legend in its own time is
the hallmark orange dial, which is at the
antipodes of conventional thinking that
insists on black or white backgrounds
for diving watches. Legendary
Jacques-Yves Cousteau, co-inventor
of the Aqua Lung underwater breathing
apparatus and originator of modern-day
scuba diving, likes DOXA's SUB concept
so much that he secures the sole
distributorship for his company,
US Divers.
In 1969, DOXA keeps refining the
concept with the SUB 300T
Conquistador, the first diving watch to
feature a helium release valve. That
same year DOXA becomes the official
watch brand of the Elite Diving Unit
of the Swiss Army. As years pass,
the SUB concept is continuously
perfected and a faithful following
among both professional and amateur
divers grows around the world. In 2014,
DOXA proudly supports Jacques-
Yves Cousteau's grandson, Fabien
Cousteau, on his historic Mission 31.
The 31-day challenge on board Aquarius,
the world's only undersea marine lab
located in the Florida Keys National
Marine Sanctuary, sets a new submersion
record for human oceanic exploration.
Today, DOXA remains faithful to the
principle established by Georges
Ducommun over a hundred and thirty
years ago: to produce high quality
watches at affordable prices. With
redesigned collections and an
emphasis on the legendary SUB diving
sports watches, DOXA's independent
status keeps the brand agile and able
to focus on creating watches that
combine high precision, technical
quality, reliability, functionality and
style. The "DOXA SUB" name stands
for some of the most iconic diver's
watches in watchmaking history. And
the legend lives on.
DOXA SUB.
THE LEGEND
LIVES ON.
THE ADVENTURE
CONTINUES.
