flushing positions, a strong jet of water
comes out at the waste water hose (3) (total
volume about 10 litres). Venting ends after a
full rotation. The operating position is
reached once the marking "1" is present on
the operating phase indicator (24) and the
right electrical cam switch (22) snaps back
to its initial position.
e) Rotate the adjusting screw (19) for the
mixing (admixing of hard water) so that
the water downstream of the softener
has the desired hardness, normally
about 8 °dH. The water hardness meas-
urement is performed with a hardness
measuring device.
The adjustment screw is only allowed to
project about 1 mm from the housing.
The adjustment range is one half turn.
The mixing water hardness changes by
1 °dH - 2 °dH per scale marking (see
fig. 6).
Fig. 6 : Adjusting the mixing
The sample water for measuring and
setting the water hardness can be drawn
at the bypass valve or from a water tap
connection downstream of the softener.
The sample water can only be taken
from the flowing water, if the softener is
in the operating position (marking "1" on
the operating phase indicator (24)) and
the set mixing water is reliably routed
through the possibly long pipe from the
softener to the drawing point. For a cor-
rect measuring value comparison, the
samples should be taken with a normal
water flow (one tap fully open) without
any large volume of water being drawn
simultaneously at another point.
f) After the softening, the sodium concen-

tration in the mixing water increases, de-
pendent on the raw water hardness and
the set desired mixing water hardness.
Calculation of the sodium content in the
mixing water in accordance with the
drinking water ordinance:
Calculation of the sodium content
°dH
- °dH
= °dH
x 8.2 mg Na
Na ions exchange value
= mg/l
+ mg/l
= mg/l
Tab. 3: Calculation of the sodium content
Example
20 °dH
- 8 °dH
= 12 °dH
x 8.2
= 98 mg/l
+ 10 mg/l
= 108 mg/l
Tab. 4: Typical calculation of the sodium content
If the calculated total sodium content is too
high, then it can be corrected by an appro-
priate setting of the mixing water hardness
to a higher value (see e).
g) Plug the power supply unit (1) into a
socket.
