The robbe Head-Lock gyro is ideal for small and medium-sized electric-powered model helicopters. The gyro could hardly be simpler to handle,
but nevertheless it is important to read through these instructions in order to become fully conversant with the device.
The gyro can be operated either in normal mode or head-lock mode, and is therefore also suitable for helicopters with aerobatic capability.

Installation notes
- Check the operation of the radio control system. Check in particular that the servos rotate in the correct direction.
- Mount the gyro at the model's Centre of Gravity using double-sided foam tape (bottom of gyro at right-angles to the main rotor shaft).
- Connect channels 4 and 5 to the receiver, and connect the tail rotor servo to the gyro.
- Switch the transmitter on, and set the sticks and trims to centre (neutral).
- Switch the receiver power supply on. After a brief self-test phase (initialisation) the LED on the gyro lights up; the device is now ready for use.
Do not touch or move the model during this period.
Set-up information, operating notes
- Channel 5 is used to switch between normal mode and head-lock mode. The gyro is in head-lock mode if the tail rotor servo does not auto-
matically return to the neutral position when you move the model on the ground.
- Gyro gain is adjusted manually by rotating the gain adjustor on the gyro itself.
- Reversing the direction of effect: check the direction of gyro effect as follows: activate 'normal mode' at the transmitter. Raise the helicopter
from the ground and rotate it abruptly to the left around its vertical (yaw) axis: the gyro should now move the tail rotor blades in the direction
indicated in the sketch. If the gyro works in the wrong direction, correct it using the gyro direction reversing switch.
Gyro gain
- Gyro gain (sensitivity) is pre-set at the factory, but can be adjusted if you need to fine-tune the setting. This is the procedure:
- Fly your model in the forward direction as fast as possible, then give the tail rotor stick a sharp push away from the neutral position, so that the
helicopter's tail swings out: if it starts to oscillate after the initial swing, gyro gain is set too high: rotate the gain adjustor on the gyro to the left.
- If the tail recovers without any tendency to oscillate, you can try increasing gain by turning the adjustor to the right. You have found the opti-
mum gain setting when you carry out this test, and the tail almost - but not quite - starts oscillating.
- If you need to carry out changes to gyro gain, always make them in small increments.
