Semaphore Distant Signal Vr0 / Vr1
Read the operating instructions and these
supplementary instructions carefully before
using the product for the fi rst time or install-
ing it. This product may only be used for the
intended purpose as outlined in this manual.
This model of a railway signal has been
designed for the installation in model train
layouts and must be connected to an ap-
proved transformer for model trains or a
digital command control system which is
powered by such a transformer in rooms
with low humidity. Any other use is consid-
ered unsuitable and the manufacturer is not
liable for any consequential damage.
Introduction
Viessmann digital semaphore signals are afford-
GB
able and easy to install mechanically and electri-
cally. The special low-speed-drive is located in the
housing fi xed to the signal which also contains the
digital decoder as well as the contacts for switch-
ing the power to the insulated rail section in front
of the signal. It is a true "plug-and-play" item; no
electrical knowledge is required.
The semaphore distant signals can either be locat-
ed at the appropriate distance before the main sig-
nal or directly in front of a semaphore main signal
(indicating the aspect of the following main signal).
Placement of Semaphore Dis-
tant Signals
Since trains run with steel wheels on steel tracks
(very little friction) they need comparatively long
braking distances. In other words, even if the en-
gineer reacts instantaneously the train would only
come to a standstill a long distance past the main
signal. To avoid accidents due to the long braking
distances distant signals were introduced. They
indicate the aspect of the following main signal to
the engineer. Distant signals are normally located
approximately the equivalent of the braking dis-
tance before the main signal on the right hand side
of the track. Thus the distance between main- and
distant signal depends on the maximum permitted
speed and the gradient (downhill) of the particular
stretch of the main line; typically the distant signal
is placed 400 m, 700 m or 1,000 m before the
main signal (see fi gure 5 at page 10 and 11).
To assure that the engineer will never miss a dis-
tant signal, three markers are located on the right
hand side of the track ahead of the distant signal.
The fi rst marker has three diagonal bars, the
second two and the third one bar. These markers
4
are illustrated on page 11 in H0 scale. If you cut
them from the instruction sheet and glue them to a
pin you can place them on your H0 layout. These
markers are spaced at an interval of 75 m to each
other while the distance of the last marker to the
distant signal is 100 m (see fi g. 5 at the pages
10 and 11). The type of distant signal has to cor-
respond with the type of main signal. The signal
4709 belongs to the group of main signals with
one indicator arm as for instance the Viessmann
signals 4700, 4600, 4500, 4505, 4507 or also the
signal 4530.
Function test
Prior to installing the signal you should test all
functions of the signal. Connect the signal to the
DCC system temporarily (see fi g. 1 on page 8),
program the desired address and switch from red
to green and vice versa several times. The signal
should show the following aspects:
set to 'red'
Vr0 'await stop'
Connecting the Signal
The digital signal is equipped with a slow-speed-
drive and the digital decoder. The decoder is
suitable for operation with the Märklin-/Motorola
format as well as with any DCC system as per
NMRA. Therefore connecting the signal is almost
child's play. There are two options for supplying
power to the signal solely from the digital system
as shown in fi g. 1 on page 8 or you may choose
the better option as shown in fi g. 2, namely to uti-
lize a separate power supply and thus reduce the
load drawn from the digital system. This trans-
former may not be used as the power supply
for the digital command station or a booster!
The integral contact (wired to the two red cables)
of the semaphore distant signal can be used for
one of the two tasks described below – if required:
if the catenary system is powered, the integral
contact can be used to switch the stop section
of the catenary ahead of the corresponding
main signal;
set 'green'
Vr1 'await drive'
