F-14 D Super Tomcat „Last Flight"
Die Grumman F-14 Tomcat ist ein zweistrahliges, zweisitziges Überschall-Flug -
zeug, das mit Schwenkflügeln ausgestattet ist. Von 1974 bis 2006 war die F-14
der primäre Luftüberlegenheitsflieger der United States Navy, der Abfangjäger
für die Flotten verteidigung und wurde für die taktische Aufklärung eingesetzt.
Sie wurde erstmals 1972 in den Dienst der U.S. Navy gestellt und ersetzte die F-
4 Phantom II. Am 22. September 2006 wurde sie bei der Flotte der Navy außer
Dienst gestellt und durch die F/A-18E/F Super Hornet ersetzt.
Die endgültige Variante der F-14 war die F-14D Super Tomcat. Die Variante F-14D
wurde erstmals 1991 ausgeliefert. Die ursprünglichen TF-30 Triebwerke wurden
durch GE F110-400 Triebwerke ersetzt. Die F-14D verfügte auch über neuere,
digitale Avioniksysteme.
VFA-31 ist das zweitälteste, aktive Geschwader der US Navy. Ursprünglich wurde
es am 1. Juli 1935 als VF-1B Shooting Stars etabliert und flog die Boeing F4B.
Später wurde es umbenannt in VF-6, VF-3, VF-3A, VF-31 und nun mit der Super
Hornet trägt es die Bezeichnung VFA-31.
VF-31 erhielt Anfang 1981 die F-14 Tomcat. Während seiner langen Geschichte
erhielt VF-31 den 'Battle Efficiency Award' für das beste Jagdgeschwader in der
Atlantikflotte, den prestigeträchtigen ' A dmiral Joseph Clifton Award' für das
erstklassige Jagdgeschwader in der Navy und die Auszeichnung 'Chief of Naval
Operations Safety „S" '. Das Geschwader war die letzte Einheit, die die F-14 Tom -
cats der Pazifikflotte flog. VF-31 agierte als ein Teil der Atlantikflotte weiterhin
mit dem noch vorhandenen Geschwader der F-14 und wurde 2005-2006 für den
allerletzten Einsatz mit der F-14 an Bord der USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71)
mit VF-213 Blacklions zusammengeschlossen, die ebenfalls mit der F-14D flog.
Am 7. Februar 2006 fand der letzte Einsatz der F-14 Tomcats für einen Kampfauf -
trag statt. VF-31 war die letzte F-14 Einheit, die eine Bombe abwerfen durfte. Mit
ihrem letzten Einsatz auf der USS Theodore Roosevelt können VF-31 und VF-213
auf 1.163 abgeschlossene Kampfeinsätze zurückblicken.
Am 10. März 2006 kehrten VF-31 und VF-213 nach dem letzten Einsatz der F-14
zur NAS Oceana zurück. Alle 22 Tomcats flogen in einer Keilformation über NAS
Oceana, begleitet vom Applaus mehrerer hundert Zuschauer. Im späten Juni
2006 wurde die VF-31 ausgezeichnet mit dem ' A rleigh Burke Award'; Das ist die
Auszeichnung die „an das Schiff oder an das Geschwader verliehen wird, welches
die Kampfeffizienz am deutlichsten verbessern konnte". Neben dem Arleigh
Burke Award wurde VF-31 ebenso ausgezeichnet mit dem U.S. Fleet Forces
Command Golden Anchor für Retention Excellence, und der Kommandant der
Naval Air Force erhielt die Auszeichnung U.S. Atlantic Fleet Battle ÒEÓ. Die Logos
dieser Auszeichnungen wurden am Rumpfende der „100" Tomcat des
Kommandanten angebracht.
Bis Ende September diesen Jahres leistete VF-31 weiterhin mit der F-14 Tomcat
ihren Dienst. Die „offizielle" Zeremonie der Außerdienststellung, der „Tomcat
Sunset", fand am 22. September 2006 an der Naval Air Station in Oceana statt.
VF-31 war das letzte Tomcat-Geschwader und wurde umbenannt in VFA-31
Tomcatters. Die Tomcatters haben vor kurzem ihre F/A-18E Super Hornets in
Empfang genommen.

The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, two-seat, variable
geometry wing aircraft. The F-14 was the United States Navy's primary maritime
air superiority fighter, fleet defense interceptor and tactical reconnaissance plat-
form from 1974 to 2006. It entered service in 1972 with the U.S. Navy, replacing
the F-4 Phantom II, and it was retired from the active U.S. Navy fleet on 22
September 2006, having been replaced by the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.
The final variant of the F-14 was the F-14D Super Tomcat. The F-14D variant was
first delivered in 1991. The original TF-30 engines were replaced with GE F110-400
engines. and the F-14D also included newer digital avionics systems.
VFA-31 is the second oldest active US Navy squadron. VFA-31 was originally
established as VF-1B Shooting Stars on July 1, 1935 flying the Boeing F4B, being
later renamed into VF-6, VF-3, VF-3A, VF-31 and now with the SuperHornet:
VFA-31.
VF-31 received the F-14 Tomcat in early 1981. During its long history, VF-31
received the Battle „E" for the best fighter squadron in the Atlantic Fleet, the
prestigious Admiral Joseph Clifton Award for the top fighter squadron in the
Navy, and the Chief of Naval Operations Safety „S" award. The squadron became
the last unit to fly F-14 Tomcats with the Pacific Fleet. VF-31 continued to oper-
ate with the remaining F-14 squadrons as part of the Atlantic Fleet and was
teamed up with VF-213 Blacklions, also flying F-14D, for the very last cruise ever
with the F-14 in 2005-2006 on board the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-71).
On February 7, 2006 was the last recovery of F-14 Tomcats from a combat mis-
sion. VF-31 was credited with being the last F-14 unit to drop a bomb. During
their final deployment with the USS Theodore Roosevelt, VF-31 and VF-213 col-
lectively completed 1,163 combat sorties.
On March 10, 2006, VF-31 and VF-213 returned to NAS Oceana after the final F-
14 deployment. All 22 tomcats flew together in a wedge formation over NAS
Oceana as hundreds of people cheered. In late June 2006, VF-31 was awarded
the Arleigh Burke Award, which is awarded „to the ship or squadron with the
most improved battle efficiency". Besides the Arleigh Burke Award, VF-31 was
also awarded U.S. Fleet Forces Command Golden Anchor for Retention
Excellence and the Commander, Naval Air Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet Battle ÒEÓ
award. Logos of these awards are painted on the tail of the CO's „100" Tomcat.
VF-31 remained operational in the F-14 Tomcat right up until the end of
September that year. The „official" final flight retirement ceremony, the „Tomcat
Sunset", was on 22 September 2006 at Naval Air Station Oceana. VF-31 was the
last Tomcat squadron, and was redesignated VFA-31 Tomcatters. The Tomcatters
have recently received their F/A-18E Super Hornets.
