Item-No. 97 19 37
Intended Use
The product can be used to connect a 3.5" or a 2.5" SATA hard disk drive to a computer (via USB
2.0/1.1), without installing it in the enclosure. An external mains transformer (for 230V~/50Hz) provides
the power supply.
This product complies with the applicable National and European specifications. All names of compa-
nies and products are trademarks of the respective owner. All rights reserved.

Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to observe
these safety instructions! We do not assume any liability for any consequential
damage!
We do not assume any liability for material and personal damage caused by
improper use or non-compliance with the safety instructions! The warranty will be
void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inadmissible
because of safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The design of the AC transformer complies with protection class II. Only connect the
power transformer to a 230V~/50Hz mains socket.
• Only use the external power transformer supplied to power the unit.
• The product must not get damp or wet as this may damage it, danger of a fatal electric
shock!
• The device is not a toy. Keep devices that operate on the mains voltage out of the reach
of children! Therefore, take extra care if children are around.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become dangerous playing
material for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impact, blows, or accidental drops,
even from a low height.
Connection
• Switch on your PC and wait until the operating system has finished loading.
• With Windows 98SE, the driver on the CD included in the delivery must be installed first.
With Windows ME/XP/Vista, the driver are included with the operating system, the CD
must not be used!
• Connect the low-voltage from the supplied transformer to the correct input on the rear of the
housing.
• Plug the mains transformer into a mains socket (230V~/50Hz).
• Connect the USB connector, on the rear, to a free USB2.0 port on your computer, using the USB
cable supplied.
• Naturally, a conventional USB1.1 port on the computer can be used instead of a USB2.0 port.
However, in this case the transfer data rate will be very low (USB1.1, about 1MByte/sec max.).
Inserting a Hard Disk
• First, switch off the enclosure (on/off switch on the top, the power LED is off).
• Insert a 3.5" or 2.5 SATA hard disk vertically into the upper opening, so that the terminal block of the
SATA hard disk fits exactly on to the plugs inside the enclosure (if you press the dust cover slightly
with a finger, you can see the plugs inside the enclosure).
Do not exert force during insertion! However, the terminal blocks on the SATA hard disk
must lock into place.
• Switch on the enclosure.
Ejecting a hard disk
• First, switch off the enclosure (on/off switch on the top, the power LED is off).
• Wait at least 30 seconds, so that the magnetic disks can come to rest.
• Pressing the left eject button causes a lever to lift up the hard disk mechanically and unlocks the hard
disk. This may be a bit stiff for 3.5" SATA hard disks. You can also pull out the hard disks manually,
without pressing the eject button.
Partitioning / Formatting the Hard Disk
www.conrad.com
• This can be done easily in Windows XP (click on "administration" in the system settings, then "com-
Version 10/08
puter administration", "data storage" and finally on "drive administration").
°
Then, select the correct hard disk drive and create a new partition. It then has to be formatted. The
procedure is quite similar in Windows Vista.
• In Windows 98SE/ME however, the DOS commands "FDISK" (for partitioning) and "FORMAT" (for
formatting) are required.
Start the MSDOS prompt and enter "FDISK". Under menu option "5. Changing of current hard drive",
the external hard disk drive has to be selected. Example: If you only have one internal hard disk drive,
select hard drive "2". Afterwards, a primary partition can be created.
Exit FDISK by pressing the ESC button and reboot your computer.
Afterwards the partition on the new hard disk can be formatted, either via the Windows file manager
or with the "FORMAT" command from the MSDOS prompt (ensure it is the new hard disk that is for-
matted and not the already existing hard disk drive, or partition, data loss!).
Handling
Cleaning
Use a clean, dry soft cloth for cleaning. Do not use any aggressive cleaning agents as these may result
in discoloration of the housing.
Tips & Notes
• USB2.0 devices are backwards compatible. This means that the USB2.0 integrated in the hard disk
drive can also function with conventional "slow" USB1.1 ports, but then only at the maximum USB1.1
speed (effective max. ca. 1MByte/s).
With USB2.0 several MBytes/s are possible, depending on the motherboard/PC.
• Windows 98SE/ME does not recognise hard disks that are formatted with the file system NTFS.
These operating systems only recognise hard disk drives with the "FAT32" file system.
• Always treat hard disks with care. Impacts during operation (also for a few seconds after switching
off) may cause the write/read head to touch the magnetic disk, which destroys the hard disk!
Disposal

A new hard disk has to be partitioned and formatted before it can be used and displayed e.g
in the Windows file manager.
• Do not move the product when it is in operation. Never pull out the hard disk drive,
when the enclosure is switched on. After switching off, wait for at least 30 seconds
before pulling out the hard disk.
• Grasp the hard disk laterally in the housing, do not touch the plate with the electronics.
Electrostatic discharge can destroy the hard disk and the docking station.
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor pinched.
• Only use in dry indoor locations. The product must not get damp or wet!
• Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation location
and during transportation:
- Excessive humidity or damp
- Extreme cold (<0°C) or heat (>45°C), direct sunlight,
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found in the vicinity of machinery or loudspeak-
ers
• Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold room to a warm
one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit. In addition, there is a risk of
a fatal electric shock.
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the power supply
and putting it in to use. This may take several hours.
• Ensure that the insulation for the entire product is neither damaged nor destroyed.
• Check the product for damage before each use!
If you detect any damage, do NOT connect the unit to the mains voltage! This presents
a danger to life!
• It can be assumed that safe operation is no longer possible if:
- the device is visibly damaged,
- the device does not operate any longer and
- the device has been stored under unfavourable conditions for a long period of time or
- it has been subjected to considerable stress during transportation.
• Any maintenance or repair work must only be carried out by authorised personnel.
Please dispose of the device when it is no longer of use, according to the current statu-
tory requirements.
