capacity (called "thin provisioning"). Then, space is allocated to the
volumes only as you accumulate data on them.
After you set up or edit your volumes, the main page in Drobo
Dashboard will list all valid volumes.
Note that on DroboElite, you must use the iSCSI connection to format
your volumes. If you are still connected using USB, shut down your
DroboElite (Advanced Controls -> Tools -> Shutdown), disconnect the
USB cable and connect to one of the iSCSI ports using one of the
enclosed Ethernet cables. After initial configuration, you can perform all
functions via the iSCSI connection.

Picking a file system and volume size

Depending on your computer's operating system, you have several
choices for the file system format and size of the file system on your
DroboPro/DroboElite. You should pick the combination that works best
for your expected usage of your Drobo storage device. For most
customers, we recommend choosing the largest volume size available
for the selected file system. The size of the volume you select is
independent of the amount of actual storage in your
DroboPro/DroboElite because of the advanced storage virtualization
technology.

VMware and Linux Customers

If you are using the VMFS or EXT3 file system formats on your
DroboPro/DroboElite, you will need to use the formatting facility in
VMware or your Linux distribution. You should set the IP address(es)
and create volumes using Drobo Dashboard on a Mac or Windows PC.
