Hospital Ship S.S. HOPE
Unter der Schirmherrschaft der „People to People Health
Foundation" bringt dieses ehemalige Lazarettschiff der Navy aktu-
ellste Medizintechnik zu Entwicklungsländern überall auf dem
Erdball. Finanziert wird das Schiff durch Spenden von Bürgern der
USA und der US-amerikanischen Industrie. Auf ihrer ersten Fahrt
nach Djakarta in Indonesien behandelte ihr Personal, das aus 63
Ärzten, Krankenpflegekräften und Techniker besteht, nicht nur
zahllose schwere Fälle, sondern führte auch Fortbildungen für
indonesische Ärzte und Pflegekräfte durch und informierte diese
hierdurch über die neuesten Entwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der
medizinischen Wissenschaft. Die HOPE, die eine Verdrängung von
15.000 Tonnen aufweist, wurde von der Navy an das „Project
Hope" ausgeliehen und wird von den American President Lines
betrieben. Das Schiff ist 158,50 m lang, die größte Breite beträgt
21,95 m und sie erreicht eine Geschwindigkeit von 18 Knoten
(33,35 km/h). An Bord gibt es drei große Operationssäle, einen
speziell ausgestatteten Raum für Augenoperationen und einen
Kreißsaal. Es können 250 bettlägerige Patienten aufgenommen
werden. Die HOPE ist das erste Schiff einer geplanten Great White
Fleet, die aus einigen Schiffen mit ähnlicher Ausstattung bestehen
soll. Ihr Einsatz soll in Ländern erfolgen, die den Einsatz spezifisch
anfordern. Diese humanitäre Dienstleistung wird dringend
benötigte medizinische Information an Orte bringen, die bis jetzt
nur über eine allereinfachste Ausstattung verfügen und wo eine
Bevölkerung mit wachsendem Bewusstsein einen dringenden
Bedarf an Informationen über gesundheitsbezogene und medizi-
nische Themen hat. Letztendlich wird hierdurch auch ein Signal
dafür gesetzt, dass das amerikanische Volk gerne die
Errungenschaften einer freien Welt teilen möchte.

Sailing under the auspices of the People to People Health
Foundation, and financed by donations from private citizens and
U.S. industry, this ex-Navy hospital ship carries the latest medical
techniques to the under developed nations of the world. On her
first voyage to Djakarta, Indonesia, not only did her staff of 63
doctors, nurses and technicians treat countless serious cases, but
they also conducted lectures for Indonesian doctors and nurses,
bringing to them information about latest developments in med-
ical science. The 15,000 ton HOPE was loaned to Project Hope by
the Navy, and is being operated at cost by the American President
Lines. She is 520 feet long, has a beam of 72 feet and a speed of
18 knots. There are three large operating rooms, as well as a spe-
cial room for eye surgery, and an infant delivery room. She has
ward space for 250 bed patients. The HOPE is the first ship of a
proposed Great White Fleet, which will be made up of several sim-
ilar ships, each making calls at countries that make specific
requests for their service. This humanitarian service will bring much
needed medical information to parts of the world where only the
most primitive facilities are now available, and where an awaken-
ing populace are in dire need of health and medical education. It
will go far in showing the world that the American people as indi-
viduals are anxious to share the benefits of a free society.
