VOC Retourship BATAVIA
Die BATAVIA war ein Dreimaster, der zu den „Retourschiffen"
gehörte, die Güter (u.a. Seide, Muskat, Zimt, Pfeffer) und
Personen zwischen den Niederlanden und Asien transportier-
ten. Der schwerbewaffnete Frachtsegler wurde 1628 in
Amsterdam von der Vereinigten Ostindischen Kompanie
(VOC) gebaut, doch war dem Schiff nicht viel Glück beschert.
Schon auf der Jungfernfahrt mit dem Ziel Java (Indonesien),
zerschellte die BATAVIA im Juni 1629 an einem Riff vor der
Westküste Australiens. Von 341 Passagieren und Seeleuten
ertranken 40 in der Brandung. Den übrigen gelang es, sich auf
eine nahe gelegene Insel zu retten. Anschließend entschied
sich der Kapitän, mit einem Beiboot Hilfe aus der Stadt Batavia
(heute: Jakarta) zu holen. Während seiner Abwesenheit kam es
zu einer Meuterei mit über 100 Opfern, die der Kapitän aber
bei seiner Rückkehr beenden konnte. Nach dem Fund von
Original-Wrackteilen machte sich der niederländische Schiffs -
bau meister Willem Vos im Jahre 1985 daran, den Dreimaster zu
rekonstruieren. Mit Hilfe von Jugendlichen, die eine handwerk-
liche Ausbildung auf dem Schiff erhielten, und Freiwilligen
konnte das historische Schiffsbau-Projekt in 10 Jahren vollen-
det werden. Das Ziel war eine möglichst authentische Rekon -
struktion unter Anwendung ursprünglicher Materialien (u.a.
1.800 ccm Eichenholz; 21 km Hanfseil; 1.180 m Segeltuch aus
Kanvas) und nach alten handwerklichen Traditionen. Am 7.
April 1995 taufte die niederländische Königin Beatrix die
„neue" BATAVIA, die heute in Lelystad vor Anker liegt und von
jedermann besichtigt werden kann.

The BATAVIA was a three-masted merchant ship that trans-
port goods (including silk, nutmeg, cinnamon and pepper) and
people between the Netherlands and Asia. This heavily armed
sailing ship was built in 1628 in Amsterdam by the Dutch East
India Company (VOC), but the ship was not a lucky one. In
June 1629, on her maiden voyage to Java (Indonesia), the
BATAVIA was dashed against a reef of the west coast of
Australia. Of the 341 passengers and crew aboard 40 were
drowned in the surf. The rest succeeded in making it to a near-
by island. Then the captain decided to take a long-boat and
seek help in the town of Batavia (now Jakarta). During his
absence over 100 fell victim to a mutiny that broke out and
had to be ended by the captain on his return. After parts of
the original wreck were found, in 1985 the Dutch master ship-
builder Willem Vos set about the task of reconstructing the
three-master. With the help of volunteers and young people
who received vocational training on the ship, after 10 years the
historical shipbuilding project was completed. The aim was to
produce the most authentic reconstruction possible using orig-
inal materials (incl. 1,800 ccm of oak timbers, 21 km hemp rope,
1,180 m canvas sailcloth) and traditional craftsmanship. On 7th
April 1995 the Dutch Queen Beatrix launched the "new"
BATAVIA which now lies at anchor at Lelystad and is available
for all to see.
