IP-address:
The unique identification of a participant in the network is indicated by the IP-address. The
IP-address is allocated to the participant either in a static or a dynamic way via DHCP.
DHCP is not supported by the Ethernet option. An IP-address consists of 4 bytes and
is usually in decimal form. The byte value range is between 0 and 255. To achieve better
readability, the bytes are separated by full stops.
Subnet Mask:
The IP-address comprises a Net-ID and a Host-ID. The Net-ID serves to address the
network, the Host-ID to address the participant. Out of the 32 bits of the subnet mask the
bits of the Net-ID are set to 1. Which part of the IP-address belongs to the Net-ID depends
on the size of the network. The overview below depicts the 3 essential network categories.

It is possible to break up a network into further sub-networks (subnets). A part of the Host-
ID is used to achieve this sub-division. However, this course of action reduces the number
of potential participants in the subnet. In the original setting the subnet mask is set for a
category 3 network.
Gateway :
The Net-ID allows the Ethernet option to detect whether the recipient of the data is
registered in the same subnet. If this part of the recipient's IP-address matches the
Ethernet option, the data will be directly forwarded to the recipient. If there is a difference,
the recipient is not registered in the same subnet. The data will be forwarded for further
transfer to the configurative gateway.
Course of action for testing communication:
After configuration a first test of the Ethernet option can be carried out. For simple tests
and diagnosis in networks apply Ping. Ping allows you to test, whether a specific
participant exists in the network and whether he/she is approachable. To activate the Ping
command, go to the DOS input request (command prompt). The overview below shows
the command syntax and possible responses.
