Check-list for installation and operation
1. Position the lower section
The installation height of above-ground fire hydrants is to be arranged
so that the upper edge of the riser is 5 cm higher than the pit backfill.
2. Pressure test
After the connection of the fire-hydrant to the drinking-water mains,
a pressure test should be carried out before filling in. After the mains
pressure test has been carried out, a functional test should be made.
3. Open valves
The hydrant covers should be removed. Then, by slowly opening the
main valve, any residual matter resulting from installation work can be
washed out. Afterwards, the main valve should be closed and checked
for tightness. If any leakage is noted, it is recommended that rinsing be
repeated in order to remove any foreign material possibly still trapped.
4. Drainage
In order to check drainage, the main valve should now be closed. The
fire-hydrant should now automatically drain (perceptible vacuum at the
ventilation holes in the cover).
5. Fill in around the fire-hydrant
After checking-out the water mains connection, the filling-in around the
fire-hydrant can be begun. A gravel bed must be provided up to and
above the flange joint between the inlet bend and the riser pipe. Depend-
ing on the composition of the ground (bushes and trees nearby?), it is
recommended that the fire-hydrants be protected against root infiltration
by, for example, embedding in a concrete pipe. In order to provide the
fire-hydrant with a secure footing, excavated material should be com-
pacted in layer by layer.
