• Four rubber supports
• Set of screws
• Spacer for hard drive with 9.5mm head room
• Operating Instructions
Features
• It is possible to install a 6.35cm/2.5" SATA hard disk (not provided); installation
height 9.5 or 12.5mm.
• USB3.0 connection (compatible with USB2.0/1.1)
• Power supply via USB
• The LED lights up when power supply is active or flashes during read/write access.
Safety Instructions
The warranty will be void in the event of damage caused by failure to
observe these safety instructions! We will not assume any responsi-
bility for consequential damage.
Nor do we assume liability for damage to property or personal injury
caused by improper use or failure to observe the safety instructions!
The warranty will be null and void in such cases.
• The unauthorised conversion and/or modification of the product is inad-
missible because of safety and approval reasons (CE).
• The product is intended to be used in dry indoor locations only. The
entire product must not get damp or wet.
• The product is not a toy and must be kept out of the reach of children.
• Do not leave packing materials unattended. They may become danger-
ous playthings for children.
• Handle the product with care, it can be damaged by impacts, blows, or
accidental drops, even from a low height.
Installation of a hard disc
• Remove both screws at the back of the housing.
• Push the plug-in unit out of the Aluminium frame and take the front plastic cover out.
• Position a SATA hard disc correctly on the terminal strip of the board and screw it tight
in the drawer with two fitting screws.
• Place the plastic cover on the drawer and ensure that the orientation is correct.
For hard disk with an installation height of 9.5mm, there is a spacer that is
inserted between the plastic cover and the hard disk. This prevents the plas-
tic cover from bending inwards.
• Push the drawer into the Aluminium frame. Ensure that the drawer has the correct
alignment.
• Place the rear housing cover correctly and fix it tightly; this action also fixes the
drawer in the Aluminium frame.
• If desired, the rubber supports included in the package contents can be pasted at
the bottom of the housing.
Driver Installation
The drivers of the hard disk casing are included in your operating system, hence no
data media containing the drivers is provided. Please note that a suitable controller is
necessary for USB3.0 mode (e.g., integrated in many motherboards; or attachable in
older computers as additional plug-in card).
Connection
www.conrad.com
There are several different types of USB ports:
• USB3.0 port
Version 05/10
°
According to the USB3.0 standard, it can deliver a max. current of 900mA. This
should be sufficient for the operation of the hard disk casing with the built-in hard
drive.
The maximum available current for notebooks or non-standard USB3.0 ports is less-
er. In this case, an external power supply unit (not included in the package contents)
should be used as for USB2.0/1.1, see note in „USB2.0/1.1 Ports".
• USB2.0/1.1 Port
There are two options here:
1. „Low power USB port": This can deliver a current of max. 100mA, e.g. the USB
port of a keyboard or the USB port of a USB2.0/1.1 hub without power supply unit.
2. „Low power USB port": Such a USB port can supply a maximum power of 500mA,
e.g. the USB port on a computer/notebook or the USB port on a USB hub with its
own power supply unit.
Partitioning / formatting the hard drive
• In Windows XP/Vista or Windows 7, partitioning and formatting can be undertaken
very easily from the Control Panel. Select e.g., in Windows XP the „Management"
function in „System Control", then „Computer Management", „Data Storage" and final-
ly „Data Transfer Management". This is where you select the correct hard disk and
create a new partition.
• After partitioning, the newly created partition has to be formatted (fast formatting is
sufficient; „normal" formatting may take very long to complete depending on the size
of the hard disc).
Handling
• Avoid the following unfavourable environmental conditions at the installation loca-
tion and during transportation:
- Damp or excess air humidity
- Extreme cold (<5°C) or heat (>35°C), direct sunlight
- Dust or flammable gases, fumes or solvents
- Strong vibrations, impacts or blows,
- Strong magnetic fields such as those found close to machinery or loudspeakers
• When setting up the product, make sure that the cables are neither kinked nor
pinched.
• Do not move the product with an installed hard disc when the latter is in operation.
Movements during operation could lead to the write/read heads in the hard disk
drive getting stuck on the magnet disc. This can lead not only to data loss but also
to hard disk damage! The same applies to the 30-second period after disconnection
from the computer until the magnetic disc in the hard disc has come to a standstill.
Please note:
Most 6.35cm/2.5" hard disk drives require a current of approx. 0.9A to 1A
for a short duration during start, and approx. 400-500mA during operation.
Problems may therefore arise while connecting the housing containing the
hard disk to a USB2.0/1.1 port, because very few USB2.0/1.1 ports deliv-
er the current required to start the hard disk.
The consequence is: The hard disk does not start, it is not recognised by
the operating system, the drive makes soft clattering noises. The drive
motor of the hard disk does not start!
Hence, one should invariably use an external power supply unit (not
included in the package contents) while connecting the casing containing
the hard disk drive to a USB2.0/1.1 port. The power supply unit must deliv-
er a stabilised output voltage of 5V= and a current of at least 1A. The cen-
tral contact of the round plug should be „+" (plus), the external contact „-"
(minus).
When in doubt, ask a specialist.
A new hard disk must be partitioned and formatted before it appears e.g., in
the Windows file manager and before it can be used.
Operation is only permissible in dry indoor areas. The product must not
get damp or wet!
Never use the product immediately after it has been taken from a cold
room to a warm one. The condensation that forms might destroy your unit.
Allow the product to reach room temperature, before connecting it to the pow-
er supply and putting it in to use. This might take several hours.
