BONDING
There are four main points to the bonding process, which are outlined as
follows:
1. Alignment: The tubes need to be elevated off the ground on blocks and
leveled. Each tube should be supported in three places (two supports
shown for reference only).
VERY IMPORTANT!
NOTE: Bonding of the tubes must be carried out in a certain sequence. It
is very important that the tubes are assembled in an order to allow access
to the bonded joints in case of interference in the tube caused by excess
adhesive. Each joint must be inspected after each stage to insure that the
bushings will fit in the tube easily without interference.
2. The delivered adhesive is a Epoxyd. Mix both components in a small
cup.
The adhesive needs to be applied .010" (0.254mm) thick on both the out-
side of the ferrule and inside of the tube (these surfaces need to be clean
and free from contaminates) that it is going to fit into. Use the included
application tools in the manner shown below. Clean the surfaces with
acetone e.g.
NOTE: Remember, excessive adhesive may cause interference for the bus-
hings and will be difficult to remove later!
3. Joining the Splice: When guiding the tubes together, take particular
caution to be certain that the tubes are straight and level on their sup-
ports. With the tubes lined up end to end, the luff grooves should be
facing opposite directions. The tubes are then pushed together while tur-
ning 180 degrees (they need to be twisted as they are pushed together
and NOT just pushed together straight).
NOTE: While pushing and twisting the tubes together, the joints need to
be cleaned of any excess adhesive, with special attention to the luff groo-
ve areas to insure that NO adhesive runs into or between the luff grooves.
4. Splint: Once the tubes are completely assembled, the seams and the
luff grooves both need to be cleaned of any excess adhesive once again.
After cleaning, lightly tap the wooden aligning aid into the luff groove to
insure that the groove is straight and lined up from tube to tube. A pla-
stic film should be wrapped around the joints in conjunction with a 90°
splint applied at the joint areas. This splint should extend approximately
18" to each side of the joint for support and affixed to the tubes with
tape.
Following assembly, the joints should be allowed to cure for a minimum
of 24 hours @15° - 20° C (59° - 68° Fahrenheit) before the splints are
removed or the tubes are moved. Before sailing the bondings have to cure
for 72h.
