- Before taking another test, pour out the previous
sample and follow the three step process above using
new sample material.
- Note: If the probe tip contacts the bottom of the
bucket while testing, then the sample has not been
compacted correctly. Depending on the material being
tested, it may be necessary to add additional layers.
- Remember to sample all areas of the field that
have terrain changes as stated earlier. Always take
several readings and average those readings to
achieve the most accurate results.
10. ACCURACY OF FORAGE TESTERS
1. General
The achieved accuracy of moisture testing on the field
is subject to several matters: difficulty to obtain
representative samples of forage, the maturity stage,
the phase of ensiling process, temperature, the
compaction of the sample and hence the contact to the
probe can vary on each test, also the difference of the
material under test compared to the material used test
compared to the material used for preparing the scale
affects accuracy. All scales are based on oven tests
using methods comparable to official standards with
materials which are typical on certain geographical
area. The reference temperature in 25°C when
preparing scales.
2. Conditions
The best accuracy can be obtained by precisely
following the instructions of the meter. If the material
under test differs from normal, it may be necessary to
make an adjustment to reading by user in order to suit
the scale to that particular material. This kind of
adjustment shall always be based on properly made
oven tests.
The count of tests needed for an average results is
dependent on the roughness and type of the material:
for example for corn silage more testes are needed
than for haylage. The user should examinate the
differences between successive tests with the
material; if the readings are not consistent with each
other, the sampling and testing procedures should be
rechecked and more tests prepared.
Before taking another tests the previous sample shall
be poured out and replaced with new sample material.
If the individual results differ less than 2% when
moisture content is below 25% or less than 4% when
the moisture content is over 25%, you can accept the
result for averaging. If the difference is wider, you
should take more tests until you have 3 to 5 results
with a reasonable consistency.
Remember to sample all areas of the field that
have terrain changes. Always take several
readings and average those readings to achieve
the most accurate results.
